d*s in new york mag

thanks to new york magazine for including d*s as a part of the history of brooklyn design (and a little mention here, too). needless to say i’m really honored to be included in such a talented group of designers and brooklynites. click here to see their brooklyn timeline (i’m in 2004). the entire issue is about brooklyn design so needless to say, i’m pouring through it right now online and am thrilled to see so many of my favorite designers and stores featured. i’m heading out to cover a pratt id show tonight so i’ll be posting tomorrow on some more up and coming brooklyn design. [photo here is of the future perfect and the gang that started it all]

Anonymous said: April 24th, 2006 - 5:43 pm	it was great to read this story, however i feel that everyone always writes about the same “cliquish” designers. what about those of us based in other areas of brooklyn like greenpoint, fort greene, red hook, and clinton hill? trust me-we’re out there.

design*sponge said: April 24th, 2006 - 5:46 pm	i know what you mean. the brooklyn scene is quickly being defined by the williamsburg/future perfect scene. i think they’re a bit more media savvy and certainly have a leader in dave at tfp. but feel free to send your work here, i’m always happy to showcase all talented brooklyn designers. d*s

alex valich said: April 24th, 2006 - 8:30 pm	I think we are getting a bit more coverage because we are doing a bit more avant garde work than most other designers in Brooklyn, as well as most of the US. Yes, we work together and push it out to the press. But we have worked for it. Trust me, I am grateful we got the press, but at the same time there were some inacuracies with it. I am sure everyone else will have their time to shine out there but realize that all of us have worked very hard for over 10 years in the industry and we are finally getting our due. We have all worked for the Boyms, Koonz, and many other avant garde designers. It’s been a long road. I see other brooklyn, NY, and US designers gettign press all the time. Give it a chance, work hard, get your press kits together and work the field instead of being upset. Channel that energy.

Anonymous said: April 27th, 2006 - 2:14 pm	Alex’s post is pretty indicitive of the attitude you will find in Wburg in general… The idea that “we are doing the avant-garde stuff so we deserve…..” Isn’t that subjective? It all sounds like your scene is designing for the accolades and not designing to improve life.
