loving these newbies at west elm. these colorful pillows are perfect for the end of summer and won’t break the bank (around $24 each). you can just change them out with the seasons for a new look. click here for the full selection. [lurve the bronze and ceramic lamps, too]

West Elm’s lighting selection just gets better and better, doesn’t it? I really like the faux horn table lamp on their site. I know horn and faux horn was discussed here recently and this one from West Elm, a textured resin, looks pretty nice. I’ll have to check it out in person.

I’m with you on the color of the lamp. I wish they had it in white. I hesitated too long on the white dimpled lamp, and now they’re out.

That bronze lamp IS awesome!
D*S, did you end up painting your living room an oatmeal shade? I am thinking of painting the white walls in my rental but just want a pale neutral. I was curious if you tried it out, what BM shade you used and if you were pleased with the results.

Did you see that like 5 other design blogs posted about this after you did? Always the trendsetter Miss Sponge!

Yeah, I’ve always wondered about that. I’m not trying to stir up trouble but I always wondered how bloggers feel when their work is stolen?

eesh, well i wish i could say it didn’t bug me, because it seems that there should be some blogger code of ethics when it comes to taking ideas. but you know, i think in the end the people who copy things will be exposed. anyone who reads multiple sites can tell which sites post first, so it’s up the reader to decide whether or not it bothers them. but hey, i’m only human and i have my fits of “i can’t believe they stole that” like every other blogger i know ;) it keeps me on my toes though (and inspired my new project launching in sept!)

I’ve noticed this too (!) and always wondered if I should tell you! I guess people think that we won’t notice if they pick from your site? But hey, it’s all flattery Miss Sponge!

xo,

Cara :)

This is a pretty interesting topic to think about. I actually posted about some new West Elm items yesterday and I hadn’t checked out design sponge yet. Shortly after I hit publish, I went over to see if you had any new posts and lo and behold you had beaten me to the punch! :) For a second I thought oh no I don’t want it to look like I copied, but I honestly did not know that you had already put something up. But the items we highlighted were mostly different and we only had in common, the fun lotus pillows.

I never want to step on anyone’s toes or look like I am copying, but what about those instances when you just did not know. Should all bloggers check all the blogs they currently read before they post on a certain topic or find? Or if what happened with me, should bloggers go back and edit their posts to include links to other blogs that also cover the same topic, just to give the other blogger props and due respect? Just a thought. But you’re right Grace, the ones that do blatantly copy, they will be found out after awhile and it will bite them in the rear!

Okay, I’ve babbled on long enough!

ooh man i always try to avoid this topic because i think the more we delve into it the stickier it gets. plus, it scares me as a potential war in the comments section ;)

when i started d*s i would read any blog i could get my hands on every day (i had A LOT of time), so i knew what was out there and was very careful not to repeat without linking. but it seems like some blogs feel exempt to linking or feel like the “bigger” blogs don’t need the traffic (i’ve been told that by a blogger who was taking my posts, text and all!) but either way, i think it’s everyone’s duty to be informed about what’s out there. when it comes to say, new things at west elm i think that’s a pretty open topic (because most design people know about bigger brands) but when people take smaller things (indie designers, etc) then it becomes more obvious.

i’ve stopped reading a lot of things because i don’t have as much time any more, but people still send me links like “can you believe this?” but the truth is, i can. blogs are the wild west of publishing so i think it’s kind of dog eat dog out there. i just try to stay out of that and credit as much as possible (i do a google and technorati search before i write about something) because frankly i feel silly if i’ve missed another big site doing the same post. one exception is when pr people target blogs with a mass email and email everyone. that’s a situation i feel free to credit the pr person and not every blog that wrote about it. real simple does this as does target, chiasso, jonathan adler, etc.

anyway, it’s so sticky! i generally try to stay out of the drama (and believe me, it’s there!) and stick to my site. because when it comes down to it, my blog is the only thing i can control and i do my best to be as fair as possible and be a responsible publisher.

so, let’s hope everyone out there feels the same way and we’ll all be happy (and fair) bloggers ;)

hi grace,

it is definitely a sticky subject and not something that i want to get sucked into either. i was pondering the idea if i should or shouldn’t comment and the part of me that wanted to explain my side prevailed. so i definitely do hope that i will not cause a hailstorm to occur on this post about blogging ethics.

googling a topic before posting is a good idea and i plan on including that into my process now. i hadn’t thought of doing that, it makes that step much simpler instead of clinking of link after link.

here here to responsible posting and happy and fair bloggers!!!

I’m glad someone is addressing this. I don’t want to stir anything up, but it drives me crazy when I see people steal from you or anyone. It’s just so uncalled for. There should be respect enough among bloggers to give credit where credit is due. I like that you are both using Google to research posts, it seems like a good start.

Have you ever noticed how things show up in Daily Candy after you write about them? I subscribe to your newsletter and theirs and I’m always surpsied to see things I saw on your site the week before. Do you know if they read your site? Maybe they should be kicking you some of that Daily Candy dough.
