around town: savannah

i’m still reeling from the beauty of savannah. the houses, the smells, the people, everything was just magical, almost movie-like. one grad student described it as the “slutty season” because everything was so dewy and lush and the smells of jasmine and magnolia hung so heavy in the air. i compiled a little slideshow of my shots around town, mostly homes and the beautiful squares (with some great porches and architectural detailing) so if you want to take a little mini tour of historic downtown savannah, just click here.

What a trip down memory lane. I’m a scad alumni and have be enjoying your latest post so much. It takes me back to those days of dreamy creative energy that is so robust at the school and in the city. Thanks for helping me to recapture a little bit of that feeling again.

great pictures. i love the squares of savannah and the way they quiet the city. it is also neat how the homes are pushed far enough away from the street to create a private realm (ie porch) but still engage the street thru the gates, stairs and porches. this is something older southern cities do really well, mostly because it was too hot not too!!

I agree with anonymous…as a SCAD alum and a former resident of the city for 10 years, it brings back a ton of memories. And the grad student is right, Savannah is a VERY seductive lady this time of year. Your posts have been great, and makes me very ‘home’ sick now that I don’t live there anymore! Glad you enjoyed the city and the school.

Thanks Grace for those beautiful shots. I’m a scad alumni as well, and it makes me feel nostalgic as I remember all the great moments spent there for 5 years. It is such a “powerful” city can bring all sorts of feelings. There’s definitely something magical and mysterious about Savannah.

I took my first trip to Savannah at the end of April. The weather was perfect, and I fell in love with the city. I think it would be a nice place to retire.

Another SCAD alum here. Thanks for your postings. As a current west coast resident, it’s good to see “home” again. I miss it very much.

Hi Grace,
I’m planning a trip to Savannah in April and wondered if you have any suggestions of places to see/ visit? I know your trip there wasn’t that long, but thought I’d check.
Thanks, Andree

Savannah is gorgeous! my family lives there and I love visiting them. My older brother went to Scad and my family lives on Skid-Away Island. YEP - its really gross in the summer - family reunions there would consist of less than 5 mins outside trying to get pics taken - meanwhile getting eaten alive. But its a wonderful city and would be perfect for a wedding. even having a pre/post party for the family at a beach house on tybee or one of the islands would be cool.

I love your site and check it everyday

Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos. As a kid, we lived on Wilmington Island and I still miss it so much. Boston’s great, but Savannah will always be home.

Another SCAD alum here. I was just talking to someone yesterday about how much I missed being close to a beach! I’m in CO right now and while the mountains are nice, Savannah will always feel more like home than anywhere else. It’s a beautiful place to be, if you can survive the summers.
