quick fix

ac’s mom is in town tonight and i’m making dinner for the three of us. as i was getting my recipe list together it suddenly dawned on me- our dining chairs are not only awful but they’re filthy. we bought some seriously crappy ikea chairs when we moved in “until we found nicer ones”. that’s sort of the story of our entire apartment- cut to two years later and these crappy black chairs have been sitting in the back room collecting dust, gunk and cat hair. what to do in a pinch? grab some fabric from my repro depot stash and get to staple-gunnin’. i still hate the chairs but i’m crazy about this pink fabric- sometimes a bright pattern can really save the day.

the chairs look great! the frame doesn’t bother me a bit. they are simple enough to be able to put a loud fabric on and not look like “too much”.

what’s so crappy about the ROGER chair? I have several and they are actually holding up rather well, no complaints here. I love Ikea!!!!!!!!!! I have a mix of Ikea and what you would call “good furniture” in my big beautiful house and it looks delightful. ;)

Holy cow! Not only planning to make dinner, but making time to freshen up your chairs! They look amazing!

They look great! Love that fabric. I think you might love the chairs more if they were painted glossy white. For some reason a black chair does not seem like “Grace” to me ;)

you’re so right, angie. that’s what bugs me about them (aside from being too small and uncomfortable). the black. ugh. but ac has forbid me from trying to paint furniture on my own anymore- i always manage to ruin things that way ;)

Small world… I did the same thing to the same Ikea chairs a couple of weeks ago.

Yummy fabric
+ boring chair
= acceptable chair.

I’m new to crafting and I’m curious: how did you staple-gun the fabric without completely covering the seat?

Question about the fabric… is it upholstery weight? Does it matter? I see cute fabrics that I want to use for my dining chairs, but not sure if it’ll work…

kearocks- you have to be my favorite commenter of the week. though i think you sadly come in behind richard who always calls me “a rich snotty beeyotch”. i love the word “beeyotch”

anon- the fabric definitely isn’t upholstery weight, but for the price, i didn’t really care. it’s staple gunned over the icky micro-fiber fabric that came with them. i just stapled around the little holes for the screws.

Get a life, IkeaRocks. Maybe you’re one of the banished Apartment Therapy commenters come to leave trash talk at D*S now?

I love any blog where the writer tosses the word “beeyotch” around! :) And I love what you did with the chairs! Now I’m inspired for my own weekend project!

p.s. ikearocks – i was wondering if we might see your “big beautiful house”, “which looks so delightful.”?

i would LOVE to see the ikea and ‘good furniture’ mix!

now, see me, *rolling my eyes*, bless your little heart.

i think my favorite part of this entire conversation is that not only do none of us like the chair (pre-fix-up), but you are kind enough to supply us with a link should we decide to purchase it!

seriously, they look beautiful! nice work…

Oh my, I had the same chairs, well, my boyfriend bought them. I dumped them in an alley one by one with a note that said “free: please take” over a span of about a year while I replaced them with other chairs. Hilarious.

Grace, if you’re a beeyotch, then that must be new code for talented! Love those chairs! That fabric, whatever the heck it’s made of, takes those chairs up a few notches for sure!

The black doesn’t seem to fit the fabric. maybe that is why you don’t like them. maybe a high-gloss white or orange (pink, even) would make them a little more cohesive? yeah for spray paint!

Thanks for the great tip! I have some wooden folding chairs ($40 apiece from Costco 10 years ago) that actually look OK, except for the now-dingy and stained fabric on the seats, which has rendered them the Chairs of Last Resort. And I have a staple gun!
