I’ve actually been looking for a set of faux bamboo chairs for the last year and a half.

Of course, I’m not the only one fixated on them right now — these design obsessions *do* tend to spread by osmosis.

I was pleased to read that Grace had been on the hunt for a set, too. That must mean I have good taste, right?

some people have loved bamboo way before this post too. Not everyone has the same taste either. It could also mean you have bad taste, if you think grace has good taste.

How much did it cost to get those chairs powder-coated? I’m assuming it’s pretty expensive? Could you do it yourself or are the results really, really different?

You know you’ve totally made it when you have your own hate club!

Anyway, Katie:

It cost $200 to have all four chairs sandblasted and powder-coated. Not cheap, but the chairs were in pretty sorry shape when I got them — very flaky and peeling from years spent outdoors — so I think the cost was reasonable to give them new life.

Plus, I bought the chairs for next to nothing, so it all worked out, price-wise.

If the original paint job hadn’t been so chippy, I totally would have spray-painted them myself.

I really like how they turned out — the finish is really smooth and shiny. Now I’m itching to get a more major piece of furniture, like a table or dresser, powder-coated in a crazy color like hot pink or lime green, just for the fun of it.

A few people have asked about where/how to get this done. Just look in the yellow pages under “metal refinishing” or “powder-coating,” or ask your friendly neighborhood auto body shop.
