peg board project

as much as i loved my kitchen corkboard project, ac was right- it’s not the most practical thing for the kitchen. it turns out i don’t need to pin things up as often as i thought, so i decided to take a tip from julia child (via domino) and build a peg board for my pots, pans and cooking utensils. i bought a piece of pre-cut peg board at home depot for $10 and then had two one-inch thick pieces of wood cut to form a frame behind the peg board and then painted it to match my favorite le creuset pot. ta-da! instant function. i even have my countertops back now. it was a fun way to bring some color into the kitchen, too. if you’d like to build your own homage to julia child just click here and follow domino’s instructions.

Cute idea . . . In one of the recent issues of “Readymade” they had a similar peg board project they created as a craft station. It used contact paper to create the silhouettes of the item so it was easy to know where to put it back.

Great job! and you have my favorite knife in the whole world, that santoku. Isn’t it a joy to use?

This looks really GREAT, Grace!

Although it looks perfect, I’m worried about your fabulous Jen Garrido piece in this new location WITH steam, splashes, etc…

That looks fantastic! I’m so glad, too, because bought a hunk of pegboard over the weekend to do exactly the same thing. So nice to see how it looks in real life.

What a fun idea. I think that is so cute. I just moved this weekend, perhaps we can try this out in our new kitchen.

Great project! A word to the wise… you may want to turn all of your pans, utensils, etc. toward the wall (as the top pot is) so they will 1) lie flat and 2) not gather dust in the usable area.

is that knife rack from crate and barrel? everytime we pulled a large knife off ours it would fly off the wall! do you have that problem? we are also doing a pegboard, need more cabinet room for baby bottles!

What a great idea, Grace! I think this looks much nicer than the cork board, and am thrilled to see that we have the same knife holder.

I *heart* this. I saw the previously mentioned ReadyMade craft station too. Between that and this, I’m already scheming how to hang pegboard over my dresser with a mirror, small containers, and all my jewelery attached.

I don’t have a large enough wall in my kitchen to do this, but have been thinking about putting peg board on the inside of my cupboard doors, to maximize storage inside there.

I just haven’t made it down to home depot to see, if that is feasible, as I am afraid that it might take screws that are longer than my doors are thick.

I once did a photo shoot in Julia’s kitchen before it was moved. Did you know that she outlined every item on the pegboard in black marker so it could be put back in the exact place for a quick, organized clean-up.

What a fantastic idea! It reminds me of my dads tools in his workshop. He had outlined all the tools on the board for quick reference when he was turning wood.

Thanks for memory that I had certainly forgotten.

I love the pegboard project! I definitely want to do it in my kitchen. I tried to suggest that my guy might want to do this as a weekend project, but I got the “you’re a crazy person” look, so I’ll have to do it myself I suppose. I just need to decide what color I want to paint it. Great idea to match the color to your favorite pot!

heather

it’s a totally doable weekend project, you should try it! it’s all about prep work- proper measuring for the frame and the wall (be sure to drill the frame into studs or some sort of reinforcement so it can hold heavier pots and pans) and several light coats of paint so it doesn’t drop into the holes :)

beautiful!
my boyfriend and i had been planning to do this on our kitchen wall after seeing it in domino magazine.
with the cloudy weekend ahead, it looks like we’ll be pegging our own kitchen in a bright aquamarine blue.

thanks for the lovely reminder!

Love it next to your painting! Plus, the cork was a bit dark. And proably sad and depressing in the winter, like day old snow. The peg board is more like freshly mowed then dirty sidewalk.

I just did this last weekend and I really love it. Ours is a sort of paprika-y red, and our kitchen has warm gray walls. Can’t believe I never did it before - it was so easy! You can also buy a bag of hooks from your local hardware store that will have round spacers to go between your walls and the board if you don’t want to build the wood frame.

Anonymous said:
August 28th, 2007 - 6:37 pm

What is the thickness of the pegboard? I noticed 1/4″ and 1/8″ available at the hardware store. Thanks, it is super cute!

design*sponge said:

mine is 1/4. i would definitely stick with that rather than anything thinner.

HOOK ME UP! Do your hooks fly off the board when you lift off a pan? If not, can you tell me specifically what kind of hooks you used? I’ve tried a few:

1) “S-hooks” don’t fit into the pegboard and
2) if you don’t use the visible black plastic component of the “Locking Peg Hooks” the hooks fly off the board during use.
3) Even the “Curved Peg Hook” that appears to have an extra nub that hooks into a 2nd hole on the board comes off with the lift of a pan.

It seems so simple — but I am not having any luck. Specifically, what brand, what name, a description, anything! THANKS!!

i learned (like a moron) after a week that i need “pegboard” hooks. they sell them right next to the regular s hooks at any hardware store. they work perfectly and don’t slip off when you pull pans off. just walk into the store and ask for “pegboard” hooks. they come in a small and large size. i bought a handful of both.

Thanks for the great idea — we were this close to installing an ordinary store bought metal pot-rack before spotting your article (in fact, I sold it as soon as I saw that beautiful green pegboard of yours!).

We went the easy no-painting route of the silver coated pegboard — though I do love the idea of using the pot rack as an opportunity for a color splash in the kitchen, too — mounted on a frame, then anchored into drywall. We used straight pegboard hooks for hanging. Nice to have all the gear within reach, and nice to look at. Thanks again!

Hi Everyone,
I have a carpet cleaning business in Houston,TX that was doing pretty good until the economy went bad, and with it my clientele. I have a website for the business but I dont
know what I have to do the get it to show up in a search. Right now it’s somewhere in the yahoo/google netherworld (LOL).

Is there someone on here that can give me some insight or know of anyone that coud give me insight on how I can get my local website on the front
page of a Yahoo or Google search to increase my business without it costing me 5 or 10k $$$? If so please share with me.

I thank you and my hungry over-eating children thank you.

thanks,
