Flowers are the finishing touch to any room . They can provide the wow factor, the special eye candy. Two florists in Australia are causing a stir with their arrangements. Both are known for their special event installations and innovative designs. Saskia Havekes owner ofGrandiflora creates lush and whimsical arrangements. Mass groupings of only a few different types of flowers, large luxe tropical assemblages, simple single flowers hanging on threads or suspended in recycled glass jars. Blowzy drowsy peonies, spectacular magnolia branches, roses and the fruiting heads of umbrella trees are all featured in her designs.

Joost is not so much a florist as a floral installation artist. Joost Bakker is known for his cast concrete and rusted steel frames supporting his flowers. It’s a juxtaposition of the natural and the industrial, the urban and the floral. Rubber hoses, discarded cement mixer bowls, wire, tomato stakes, old glass jars. The flowers establish their beauty by contrasting with the hard industrial edge of the arrangement. And not just flowers. My favourites are the stalks of brussel sprouts and figs on the branch.
