rare device

rd1.JPG
half of the reason i flew out west last week was to celebrate the opening of rare device west with rena tom and lisa congdon. i was too jet lagged and beat to post on friday so i thought i’d put this up this morning- better late than never. the new rare device is a glorious little gem of a shop with a gallery space curated by lisa. there’s currently a fantastic show with kelly lynn jones on and a series of incredible shows lined up for the next two years (that’s right, these girls are organized). the party was quite the scene with a number of bay-area artists and bloggers in attendance. it was so fun to see the expansion of rena’s shop and see how well she and lisa work together. my favorite part of the shop? it’s a toss-up between amy ruppel’s mural (which successfully masks a fire alarm) and lisa’s beautiful wood and paper chandelier. if you’re in the area be sure to stop by, just click here to check it out and get directions.

I just bought window films from them so it’s nice to see where they come from. Looks like a gem of a shop!

Does anybody know where the tree panels came from? I am thinking it is some sort of wall paper? Maybe fabric? Would love to know where it came from!

Thanks!

Is this shop related to the one in South Park Slope?

yes, it’s the same one. rena tom, the owner, recently moved to san francisco so she’s opened an additional store in conjunction with lisa congdon.

As this and the Curiosity Shoppe are both in/near my neighborhood I’ve been to them already. Though I bought something from each, I was struck by how much overlap there is in their current merchandise. I hope that they both manage to thrive not being that far from one another!

carla: actually there is only a small bit of overlap! we are good friends with lauren and derek of the Curiosity Shoppe and I am sure we will both do well with our respective niches. lisa

these are all good comments. since our store and Curiosity Shoppe opened in the same month and have been getting press in the same places, i think it makes it even easier to draw parallels. we are sharing a few very distinctive designers right now but i don’t feel like we duplicate that much. for example, we carry bags, clothing and jewelry and the Shoppe does not…that said we love the Shoppe bunches and are glad they are our friends!
