the curiosity shoppe (let’s try this again)

115.JPG
[this post published without images last week. so sorry. let’s try this again, with pictures this time]

i can’t tell you what an honor it is to be working with people like derek and lauren from the curiosity shoppe. their crafty-ness is unparallelled and to see their shop in person was so much fun. located in the mission (next to little otsu and across from 826!), the curiosity shoppe’s new brick-and-mortar location is a wonderland of home accessories, artwork and items you never knew you needed (wooden acorns? porcelain peanuts? perfect!). the store was designed by the lovely kate lydon (formerly of saturate design) and her boyfriend anton and oozes crafty-goodness. most of the shelving is wooden and gives the space a wonderful sense of warmth, along with an upholstered bench and fluffy blue nautical blankets. derek and lauren built some of the shelving themselves and added in details like filling joint gaps with pieces of cork. each corner of the store feels like lauren and derek, which is such a nice thing. i love when a shop owner’s personal taste can be felt throughout the space. i think i’m going back today to pick up a print but in the meantime you can visit the curiosity shoppe at 855 valencia street in san francisco. if you’re in town it’s definitely a must-visit. [there are many, many more (15 more) photos after the jump]

I wish Rare Device and Curiosity Shoppe the best but I have to say, seeing the posts on these stores one right after the other, the general vibe and merchandise of the two stores is very similar. I hope SF is big enough to support both because both seem very promising.

I love the shop, so cute, if I hadn’t just moved to Chicago, I would be in danger of filling my house with porcelain peanuts and plaster logs!

I feel like a dummy: I didn’t even realize those peanuts were porcelain when I saw them in the shop last week. Must make a return trip to pick up a handful of them …

i went to curiousity shoppe a cpl weeks ago to buy a gift for a friend’s birthday. the store is definitely clever and fun to explore, but there was absolutely nothing in there that was practical or good-looking-enough to actually buy. acorn earrings? those weird log things? i thought good design was synonymous with good aesthetic?! other product they have is the same design-stuff you see everywhere. honestly i had hoped for more. i think it’s a problem that some of these design stores (candy store in sf is another good example) are fun to shop in, but you never actually want to buy something there. am i alone here?!

This may be the biggest rip off of the original McSweeney’s store in Park Slope brooklyn I’ve ever seen. Do they even credit McSweeney’s? Wow.

miri

the curiosity shoppe has plenty of more practical items to buy, i just didn’t photograph all of them. for the purposes of this website i choose the products that i find to be the most visually interesting. the store sells books, artwork, stationery and a slew of more functional things- i just happen to prefer the “curiosities” among the collection.

I’ve ordered from the shoppe a few times and love everything I get from them. Lauren is a very pretty lady. I can’t wait to go there next time I’m in SF.
