a sad sponge

house_and_garden_entry_way.jpg
today is a very, very sad day for me. this morning we found out that house and garden magazine will be closing. i can’t tell you what an honor and privilege it was to work for such a fine publication among such incredible writers and editors. i don’t think i ever stopped pinching myself about working at a magazine with such a strong sense of history. i just wanted to publicly thank everyone at the magazine (paul, katy, betsy, jen and dominique) for letting me be a part of their team for the past two years. it was such an honor.

as wonderful as it is to run a small business on my own, it was my position with h&g that allowed me to afford to finance things like the scholarship and biz ladies meetups so finding a new position is a necessity for me. i’m trying to keep an open mind and open heart to the possibility of an equally rewarding position somewhere else so i thought i might open this up to anyone out there. i’m trying to go with the flow all the different possibilities that might exist, so if anyone knows of anywhere that d*s might be a good fit, feel free to drop a line. thanks so much for listening, it’s been a tough day.

Hey Grace, I’m sorry to hear that H&G is closing, both because it’s a great magazine and because it’s enabled you to do such great things. I am sure that the right opportunity will present itself and you will be able to keep up all the good work!

November 5th, 2007 - 1:30 pm

Oh Grace, I’m so sorry. At this point all I can say is I’m in shock too. Please hang in there. You inspire a huge audience daily!

I’m so sorry Grace! I’ve been there — my pub was dissolved a little over a year ago. But — as I can say from experience — when one door closes, a window opens. You will miss your coworkers and the memories you made at H&G, but I’m sure you’ll be able to find something that is worth of your talents.

Grace,

I will miss you terribly. I am so glad I had the chance to work with such an amazing design talent.

Don’t worry. House & Garden will live on as one the greatest influences of design. Feel blessed that we had the chance to be part of history.

Go web team!

I immediately thought of you when I read earlier about H&G. Even though I knew it was true, your post made it real. Along with Sub-Studio and other readers I’m sure, I am absolutely convinced the right opportunity will come along! For it’s worth, we are all right here behind you, too!

November 5th, 2007 - 1:40 pm

I’m so sorry to hear that but we all know your talent and eye for design can not go unnoticed. I agree with Vane. I hope blueprint, domino or some other great mag snatches you up. They’ll be LUCKY to have you. Blogland is thinking of you :)

Needless to say that didn’t happen!
He was going to come look at our home to consier it for the mag.
I am so sorry Grace. You will be in another fabulous place soon! You are a rare talent!
By the way, you gave me ad vice on my spiral stairs a while back. I’ll email the finished photos to you!

I’m so sorry — that’s such a bummer (and a shocker). I really enjoyed the magazine and your contributions to the H&G site. It will be greatly missed.

That said, I’m sure you’ll land something equally great.

Best wishes,

Leah

November 5th, 2007 - 2:02 pm

You are Super! It is very sad that H&G is going under but Im positive some wonderful opportunities will come out of this. Keep up the wonderful work!!!!

November 5th, 2007 - 2:06 pm

I agree with everyone else, something will come up. Hope you don’t lose TOO much sleep over the next few days. Big changes like this can be stressful. And you’re in NY after all, there are opportunities around every corner, at least you’re not in a small city where you have no options. I believe that good things come to good people, so you won’t have to worry too long.

Grace, hopefully it will turn into a Happy Accident and you find something equally fitting for your extraordinary abilities. On a side note I am very disappointed to hear H&G will be no longer-I was just going to subscribe! Good luck with your next adventure and I hope design*sponge will continue to grow; it is my favorite daily habit.

Your problem isn’t going to be finding another opportunity — it’s going to be choosing among them! I’ve been so happy for you about the increased exposure you’ve gotten through H&G (I’ve been reading your blog for years) and that well deserved exposure is going to serve you well in whatever you do next. Look how many people think the world of you!

Emily said:

I haven’t read all of the comments yet, so I’m sure my sentiments have already been expressed — but I’m so bummed to hear about H&G. Though I’m not a subscriber, it is one that I frequently purchase from the newsstand — really loved the celeb homes issues (esp. Chloe/Gwyneth) and am quite surprised that they are closing — it seems that they were just building up their momentum.

As a daily reader of design*sponge — I wish you all the best for what’s coming up in the future and as selfish as this sounds — I hope it doesn’t detract too much from the daily postings/musings that I look forward to so much!! Best wishes…

ah the publishing world.
it’s so sad when good magazines die. i had one fold while i was in the middle of prop shopping for them. they called me and told me to stop using the credit card and get back to the office.
the only good thing about this is that all your contacts at the magazine scatter to different publications and voila-suddenly you know people at many more magazines.
i’m sure you’ll find something but it is still sad the h&g is over. i always enjoyed it.

I am also stunned to hear this news- mostly because I felt like H&G was really re-claiming it’s place as a most unique publication. Each publication has “kicked it up a notch.” So sad we will not have H&G, but I agree that for you, Grace, this process will be mostly about deciding which opportunity to pursue and not a lack of opportunity. Best wishes, and try to remember, we always stress ourselves out in times like these, only to look back and say, I made it through it- why did I worry so much?

grace — almost a year ago… I was right exactly where you are now. The magazine I had spent 10 years with suddenly went *poof* — I know that it’s scary and sad — but that “one door closing another one opening” stuff it’s SO true. Today — I’m about to open my own little paper goods shop/gallery space — and your work here has shaped just about all of it — from the store design to the goods I’ll be stocking.

You are AMAZING — more of an inspiration than I could ever begin to explain – not just to me — but everyone who comes here.

Give yourself time to mourn – it’s important… but PLEASE believe bigger (and I have a feeling, maybe even better) things are waiting for you… I have no doubts about it!

And — THANK YOU for every little thing you’ve done w/ this blog and the biz ladies meetings and EVERYTHING — I so hope you’re aware of how awesome you are!

Jen – I loved of Organic Style too!

November 5th, 2007 - 3:46 pm

Oh how sad Grace. For you and all of your other co-workers. I wish you the best. H & G has always been one of my favorite mags. And lately, it has been looking better and better.

Publishing – it’s such a mystery. Good things go away — and usually it all has nothing to do with anything but numbers and demographics – two things that really are not near and dear to my heart. Give me color, pretty designs, lovely homes….

Good luck to you – but boy, take a break! You need one!

Grace,
Wow, that is incredibly sad news on SO many levels. I do hope your scholarship fund will continue and I know that with your influence in the design community it’s going to happen again. Even from way over here on the west coast, I can clearly see this lovely door in your life is closing only to allow another, even more sustaining, wonderful and creative door to OPEN!

It’s a crazy, star-crossed time, so just try to relax, enjoy the holiday this month and trust that the universe is working to bring you what you need, even when you cannot yet see what that something is.

be well,

This is devastating news. Sure, there are some great shelter magazines out there, but H&G is especially good about featuring artfully executed, enduring, truly habitable interiors–and not just hip, sterile lofts month after month.

I won’t be surprised, Grace, if you get a deluge of offers in the next few months. Your talent and enthusiasm are too great to go ignored very long. Good luck.

So sad about H&G. It was definitely different from other design publications and this loss will surely leave a hole in the design publication world. *sigh* The internet is great and I love your blog and all the other design blogs out there, but there is something so relaxing about lounging around your home, flipping through a magazine. I worry that magazines and newspapers may be on their way out entirely. Sad.

Best of luck!

let’s be POSITIVE. Is not sad, is not OH MY GOD, ins notign bad. all the ppl working at D&G are great in what they do and they’ll find a better job. GRACE shoudl open D*S MAgazine and start a fresh look into design, maybe with the same formula she has here. guest editors, fun sections, everyday design props, .. i think it coudl be great…just translated into paper. i know talk is easy.. fact is not so easy.
BUT changes are ALWAYS good. 2007 has been the YEAR of changes for so many (me included, new job, no more BF, and green card on the way!) and all it can came out from the experience is BIGGER and BETTER.
LAdies, positive thoughts for grace and no sadness.

I’m sorry to hear that H&G has closed. This comes to me as a real shock (I’m in Australia)… first time reading about it. It’s always sad when a pillar of strength in any arena exists no more.

I hope something great opens up for you soon Grace.

oh Grace, I’m really sorry to hear that. H&G is a higly regarded magazine, and I’m in shock to hear such news. Trust me, you’ll find a much greater opportunity in no time, Grace. D*S has been a great source of inspiration to thousands of readers around the world, I’m pretty sure other publications acknowledge that, too. All the best!

November 6th, 2007 - 4:11 am

Very disappointing news. I always look forward to this mag every month (even though I receive it down here in Aus a month late!!). I know you’ll be offered something very soon Grace!! Thinking of you down here in Aus!! XX Anna

How sad, I am so sorry for you. Even though I can´t come up with alternatives, I am sure someone will grab you once the news spread. You are a talent that can´t get wasted, so hang in there!

November 6th, 2007 - 5:33 am

Grace,
H&G’s closing is such a drag for everyone (readers and contributors). But we all know what you are capable of — you will, without a doubt, find something else very soon — you possess great talent that any publication would be very lucky to have. We all look forward to news about your next position. – steven

To new beginings! I am sure you will move on to bigger and better. Your blog is amazing.

November 6th, 2007 - 7:48 am

this might turn out to be a blessing, Grace, as it could mean D*S becomes your full time job. just need some sugar daddy (or publisher) to bank roll it….

best of luck for the future.

domino has really been going downhill lately. if you joined as a contributor, it could really perk things up. though it could definitely be neat to go to a smaller, less well known mag and work to bring it to the forefront. sometimes that’s more fun than going with a publication that’s already established. good luck with whatever you choose, because i’m sure you will have lots to choose from.

oh grace, i am so sorry to hear of your sad news about home & garden. they were, are and always will be thought of as a step above the rest. and it is so wonderful you could be a part of that! i would have known about it yesterday, had i had the chance to get my morning cup of daily blogs, but before i was able to do so, me and 16 other graphic and industrial designers and product managers were laid off. what was in the air yesterday? well, despite everything, i think the hardest part was saying goodbye to the people, as i am sure that was difficult for you as well. but here’s to new beginnings for the both of us! you are one special and uber-talented lady, and i just know you will continue forward with many positive opportunities and experiences this crazy ride we call life, has to offer!

November 6th, 2007 - 11:16 am

That is terrible news – for all concerned. I hope everyone on the publication find new exciting positions and its sad there will be one less great magazines for design on the market. In the UK we are swamped with trashy celeb publications so its always sad to see something with a heritage in taste dissappearing. Good luck Grace – I am sure you will find something new and exciting to excercise your talents on.
Best wishes

i thought i mis-heard the news this morning on NPR when they announced the closing of H&G… can’t believe it… grew up with this magazine as a staple in my mother’s home… strange it won’t exist anymore… also, really loved the direction it was going in and all of the new blood – like you!
hope you’re not feeling too down… you are such a talent with a loyal following… and you are industrious – it will all work out.

Well I for one am going to miss House and Garden. This current idea that opulence equals luxury that pervades the market place really did not have a home in House and Garden. They had innovative editors who culled the best from all levels of design expenditures. I will miss it terribly and I will still throw away those offers from the rival magazine that will allow me to subscribe for 10 dollars a year. A Savings of 50 dollars I believe.

Hi Grace,
I’ve been reading your blog every day for about a year. I’m not one to post but I just had to add my vote of confidence.

I work in the magazine business, too, as do many of my friends. Everyone is one tenterhooks (me included). Print is in decline — unjustly and hopefully not irrevocably– as advertisers rush to spend their money online. I say this not to discourage you but to tell you not to pressure yourself to find something right away. It’s tough getting hired in November and December. It’s the fourth quarter, books are being balanced, no new money until next year. That’s why H & G closed when it did. Sadly, there will be more closings and layoffs at other magazines and at newspapers before the year is up.

However, all that changes in January. New year means new money. New money means new hires — especially if there’s a new editor at the helm. They’re always given a cash infusion to take on new people.

You probably know all this already. But maybe your readership does not. One thing we can do for you is chime in, as many have done, if for no other reason but to show a prospective employer or financial backer the extent of your following.

Do you ever read Dooce? She is somehow able to support herself and her husband and daughter with the ad proceeds from her blog. And her blog is simply about her life as a stay-at-home mother.

Not to knock her but I would think a design/lifestyle blog would be a lot more attractive to advertisers.

And readers, that’s what it’s all about. It always has been. (Soap operas are called soap operas because soap manufacturers underwrote them.)

So let Grace (and her potential employer/advertisers) know you’re out there.

Best of luck to you Grace–although I don’t think you’ll need luck, just a lot of patience. Try not to worry too too much if you can help it.

It’s a real blow seeing a magazine you love and you know is good shut down. I’ve been through it myself. But I regrouped and went on to have a lot of great adventures. You will, too.

thanks so much for the kind offer. i can’t tell you how nice it has been to hear from so many of you. thank you.

as for emailing people, i’d hate to bug anyone so perhaps it’s best for me to just email everyone myself to see if they’re hiring. the publishing world can be a little tricky so as much as i appreciate the incredibly kind gesture perhaps it’s best to do the traditional resume thing?

i have my resume out to a few different magazines so we’ll see what happens.

thank you so much for the kind offer though, it’s really made this week so much more manageable.

I was shocked by this email from DWELL. I do not think it is a smart marketing move to try to take advantage of the H&G loss.

Email from Dwell:
106 years is a long time to maintain relevancy and few have done it.

As you already know, Conde Nast has announced that effective with the December issue, House Garden will cease publication. Despite Conde’s very clear statement that it no longer made business sense for them to continue, much is being written in print and online about why this occurred.

I thought it important to write to you about this event because I believe it signals a change in the shelter category; not good or bad just a shift that has been brewing for a few years. And, I don’t think the housing market is the culprit. While a downturn in housing is nothing to brush aside, it is not as fundamental to the change in the shelter category as the changing mindset of the consumer.

Ten years ago, Dwell’s owner and founder, Lara Hedberg Deam, went through a very typical home renovation process. The only thing atypical was her desire to have her ideas expressed in a way that only modern design can. During this process she noted a lack of relevant information in existing magazines, which urged her to explore the concept of a magazine and media platform to fill the void. She felt that if modern design was to be covered in media it should have a certain rigor as well as an accessibility of thoughts and ideas. It was this experience that led to the founding of Dwell. Simply, she wanted to bring modern design to everyone and illustrate the design philosophy that she found so vital in her own endeavor. Seven years later we have successfully grown the Dwell brand on five platforms – Dwell Magazine, Dwell.com, Dwell on Design, Dwell Homes by Empyrean, Dwell TV- centered on our founding premise.

Design has become a household word thanks to a host of influences, all of which have spurred discussion about the influence of design in every industry. Because of this movement, design professionals and their modern savvy consumer counterparts are engaged in a quest for good design; looking for ideas, inspiration, and great companies to deliver both. Dwell champions their mission, chronicles their journey, and leads them to every corner of the globe where good design can be found.

Losing a worthy member of the home and design category should be a reminder that the meaning of house and home has changed in a demonstrable way. Being At Home in the Modern World is what it is all about.

Warm Regards,

Michela O’Connor Abrams
