one of the things i miss most about living closer to nature is not hearing the sound of birds. my old room at my parents’ house in va is like a treehouse- the windows around the room are at mid-tree level so you feel like you’re high above the ground up in the branches. our apartment in brooklyn looks out on a lone tree a few doors down but that’s about it (there’s a lovely park behind us but nothing bird or animal-wise ventures over to our street). last year i tried desparately to lure birds to our fire escape with all sorts of bird houses but nothing worked. instead the bird food attracted hordes of pidgeons that the cats would try to swat through the glass. so whenever i see a lovely birdhouse i file it away for the day that we have a yard and real animals near us. for those of you who can actually woo birds to your hoome these lovely handmade, hand-drawn birdhouses by claire scully and d.h. painter would be a fun option. they’re around $312 dollars (man the dollar is weak right now!) so they’re a bit of an investment but they’d make a wonderful holiday gift for the special bird-lover in your life. click here for more info. the drawings below are by claire as well, they were too pretty to resist. [thanks, claire!]

Grace — now I see why your blog is always brimming with such wonderful bird art and design. You’ve created a virtual aviary until you can get back to nature.

And thank God a tree — still — grows in Brooklyn!
