diy wednesdays: marshmallow video!

hotchocokit.jpg
today is one of those days where i’m pinching myself to see if my life is real. i feel so, so lucky and honored to work with lauren and derek of the curiosity shoppe. why you ask? besides being incredible friendly and totally cool, they made what is, in my opinion, the cutest and most perfect diy marshmallow video in the entire world. need proof? just click play below and watch lauren and derek show you how to make your own marshmallows and create a gift-ready hot chocolate kit. with the music and lauren’s cute hair it feels like a san francisco version of amelie. complete with lovely food shots and an adorable couple at the end. i just love these guys. thanks to lauren and derek for the wonderful video (and all of their incredible posts so far)- i hope you all enjoy it- be sure to check out their text below the video, too!

holiday hot chocolate kit

well, here it is—our last diy wednesday post of 2007! to celebrate, we thought we’d do something a little different, so we made a movie, “how to make: home-made marshmallows”. we always get a kick out of making gifts for our friends and family, and we thought this peppermint marshmallow recipe from the latest issue of ReadyMade would be the perfect addition to our holiday hot chocolate kits.
we wish you all a wonderful holiday and a happy, happy new year!

derek & lauren

What a cute video! These two are so wonderful and creative. I’m lucky enough to live with steps of their shop. I’ve been looking for a great marshmallow recipe. I think I’ll make these right before christmas - a perfect christmas eve drink (with a little peppermint schnapps). Mmmm.

I was just debating whether I should buy or make marshmallows to use in s’mores. The homemade version in this video look so good I have been pushed in the diy direction.

This is the cutest video! I followed a similar recipe (Alton Brown’s on FoodTV) with great results. They’re a lot easier to cut with a pizza wheel (sprayed w/nonstick spray)…. So simple, yet everyone’s amazed at homemade marshmallows!

I made marshmallows about two weeks ago, and people were amazed! This is so easy to do and they taste SOOO GOOD in the end.

Ooo, I love this idea. I usually do rosemary butter cookies, but that idea was feeling a little snoozy this year. Maybe marshmallows instead!

THANK YOU! I hate to admit that I failed miserably at both the marshmallows and caramels from that issue. For the marshmallows now I see that I just didn’t beat them long enough. ANy suggestions for the caramels? They got so hard that I couldn’t get them out of my pan!

Thanks!

Way cute! Love the Amelie feel too!

Nice video. Great idea.

I made marshmallows a few months ago and they’re so much better than store bought! My trick for cutting (I mad a much larger batch) was a chef’s knife dipped in confectioners sugar. It worked so much better than the oil the recipe recommended.

I like the gravity defying sculpture mallow makes when it’s ready: http://tinyurl.com/2vfce3

I absolutely LOVE it! What I love the most is the “visual aid” it gives us non-experienced marshmallow makers. After seeing the step-by-step process, I almost believe I can do it myself and now I want to whip up my very own batch. Thanks!!

so cute! i made marshmallows, hot cocoa and gingerbread for all my friends last year and it was a real hit!
i used a chef knife dipped in sugar to cut as well. Just keep all surfaces nice and sugary and things won’t get too sticky!

I love this video. I have watched it over and over…and I don’t even like marshmallows! So cute, and very well done.

oh my god! i also thought about homemade hot cocoa kits for presents, but making my own marshmallows seemed daunting! now that i see how easy it is, i’m so going to do it. thanks!

oh, and i’ve seen pretty-shaped mallows, i think you can use cookie cutters to make them.

You can dip these puppies in melted dark chocolate too, I think (never tried it)- WOW- or hey, maybe a person could make little sandwiches out of two graham crackers and a wedge of marshmallow, and dip that in chocolate??

the video was great and i love the bowl with the birdies on it! if anyone knows of a good way to make marshmallows without gelatin (vegan version), i would love to know! i have not had much success figuring it out.

the birdie bowl came from urban outfitters (listed under “graphic bowls” in the kitchen & bar section of their site). it looks like they have an adorable woodgrain plate with birds on it too! and my dress (for the person who asked) is actually a shirt i got from h&m a few years ago. thanks everyone for the nice comments!

Jess: for a vegan recipe you can replace the gelatin with Agar-Agar: http://tinyurl.com/3byhlo

I’m not sure what the substitution ratio is (if any) so you might have to do some test batches. I did find one source that said 2 tsp of powdered Agar will gel 2 cups of liquid.

HTH.

Last Easter I made strawberry marshmellows using essentially the same recipe, and they were yummy! So easy really, the Kitchen Aide does all the work for you. Everyone is very impressed by this.

Scissors! Brilliant! I’ve always tried to do it with a knife (or cookie cutters) and it’s a hassle.
p.s. Chopped up peppermint candies are a nice addition as well….

Agar will not work.
And real marshmallows MUST have eggwhites.

I just made these exactly according to the recipe, and they turned out great!! the only thing I would have done differently is swirled a little red/pink food coloring in there right at the end, so they would have a candy cane kind of look. I put them in pink swirly transparent bags instead. Yum!
