if you love matte stephens as much as i do, you’ll definitely love his new paper sculpture at velocity. matte’s owl sculpture is made of paper and gouache on a wood base. standing 12 inches tall and about 5 inches wide, matte’s little owl reminds me of the beautiful paper sculptures that irving harper created. matte wrote an incredibly moving piece about irving for d*s in october- if you missed it i really suggest checking it out here. and if you still need more from matte? check out his sneak peek, part one and part two.

The colours are really great. I love how the one eye is almost like a crescent moon.

Awww- I love owls. I’ll have to show this to my 6 year old. He just finished an owl puppet project made out of a brown paper lunch bag…so cute.

This owl is very similar than “The Clash of Titans” owl.

I have been looking for a 3D medium to work in for years. I have tried tons of stuff from needle felting to clay to wood nothing worked for me until I tried the paper. Getting to spend time with Irving Harper really inspired me to try it.I wanted to see if it was even possible for me to do. Its very soothing and fun!!!

I love Matte’s recent transition to 3d objects. His bear monster he posted today is fabulous. He gave his permission to make ornaments based on his art for the ornament swap and family gifts and his work translates so well to felt ornaments. thanks matte

The owl is great! After seeing this piece l checked out his other work and I love it! I grew up in Alabama and it’s always great to see an artist sticking it out there.
