before and after: simple shelf makeover

shelfclose2.jpg
erin lang norris of yellow canoe sent in this simple but lovely before + after. she and her husband spent a weekend repainting this tall bookshelf a contrasting lime green and dark brown combo. “i’m trying to show my husband that it’s easy to make “old things” new again…i figured we’d start with something easy so he wouldn’t get frustrated and give up.” i think this is a perfect before and after project for someone who isn’t ready for major tools but can handle a paint roller. it’s amazing what a little paint can do.

[have a diy project you'd like to share on d*s? just shoot me a line right here.]

Wow I love that! I always want to make an old piece of furniture beautiful again and I just don’t have the motivation, but this is inspiring me.

Nine times out of ten, pine furniture is just calling out to be painted. This looks great!

It’s a great makeover. Do you mind sharing the brand names, and type of paint used (glossy or otherwise)? Thanks!

Thanks, everybody!

Bukola- the paint we used was acrylic. We bought it at Michaels- the green is Apple Barrel brand and it’s called “kiwi”. The brown is Americana brand and is called “dark chocolate”. Both were 8 oz. bottles. I was a little nervous about these brands because I’d never used them before, but they were both great!

Love it! Nice color combo–bold, fresh and modern but earthy/grounded, too.
Hope that makes sense!: )

Thanks for sharing!

Oh wow!! I love the transformation! A great reminder that it only takes a little imagination, paint and elbow grease to make something truly “one of a kind”!! :)

I just love it!

Betty- we painted the inside first…we did have to do some touch up to it, though, but found that it was much easier this way than if we had painted the outside first.

This looks absolutely beautiful.

I am a recent graduate and newly wed and trying to restore my husband’s old favourite table. But I am not sure how should I do it. I have bought primer and spray paint (its a small table) but i have been reading about sanding the wood first.
is it really necessary?
