help, please!

1143.jpg
is it wrong that i want to make pillows for our couch out of this kaffe fassett fabric ($8.95 per yard)? ok, i know, it just screams “busy” but maybe it would be so wrong that it’s right? i’ll keep it real- the pillows on our couch need to be cleaned. badly. i don’t know what we get on things but they’re due for a trip to the dry cleaner or something. i’m not quite sure how to clean two of them. either way, i thought it would be fun to make some simple pillows (maybe a bolster) from this fabric. ok, honest opinion- am i crazy? or would the colors work? i’ve been known to go a little crazy with pattern so sometimes i need to be reeled in. the fabric is above and our couch is below. help?

oh my gosh, it is so beautiful! you MUST go ahead and make the pillows. your gut reaction is right on. but i’m not sure you should run it by AC first…..

January 25th, 2008 - 9:49 am

Hmmm…maybe if you are worried about going all out, you could just use a strip of this fabric on a solid color to make a pillow? Perhaps a 4″ strip, offset to one of the sides or something. I think that would look great! Or like you said, a simple bolster (those are the tube-like pillows, right?). Good luck!

I really like it so I say yes.

January 25th, 2008 - 9:53 am

I think it would be really cheery! And at $9 per yard you won’t feel guilty about changing them when you get bored…

I actually feel like this would be okay, because the pattern on your couch is so small (or at least it looks small in the pictures) that it’s not like you’d be combining two loud patterns that might clash.

January 25th, 2008 - 9:56 am

I think it’s fabulous. It may be a little busy if you were using it in a busy room, but in a simple environment, and with the shape of your couch, it would totally work. I love it!

i think its good, its definitely contrasting enought and it bridges the christmas-spring transition very well….its fun, maybe a cat shaped pillow in that fabric to match lil cutie.

i think it would work! even though your couch has a pattern it is small enough that it really becomes a solid from far away (left pic). i think the chosen pillow fabric would accent the green in the couch quite well. :)

I actually think the pattern would work well with your couch! If you thought the pattern might be too much, you could always just do the pattern on one side of the pillow, or even just do a square of it on the front of the pillow and then solid color for the rest.

Katie said:

I say go for it! Love the idea of a bolster.

January 25th, 2008 - 10:07 am

Ick. If that hot pink were white, I’d say go for it.

Maybe you could use it as one side of the pillow and place a solid on the reverse. Or cut out those red blossoms and applique them. Cheers

It depends on how big the pattern is. If the flowers on your fabric are big (like zoom in) then it might work. When I try to imagine the pillows on the sofa, the pink bothers me a little.
In my opinion, a pattern with warm colors will work much better.

But then again, the fabric is beautiful and the sofa as well, so there is no reason they won’t work together.

Hope I helped a little

i think it’s amazing. i mean—amazing in a busy way but outstanding nonetheless. but just one or two simple pillows (bolster good idea) so it doesn’t look grandma-gone-crazed. go with your wild instinct—i love it!

I think it would look fabulous. The pattern on your couch looks fairly subtle- I think the colours and kinetic feeling of the kaffe fassett fabric would really complement the style and fabric of the couch. Go fo it!

okay, so alone, i don’t love the floral fabric. but, combined with the hable construction (?) fabric on the couch, i think it’s fabulous! i can’t tell from the picture, but i’d say as long as the greens worked well together, it would give your couch a great jolt of interest. and i love the idea of a bolster. although it’s hard to imagine a bolster coming in handy while curled up watching a movie.

January 25th, 2008 - 10:14 am

I say go for it! I’m seeing pink all over the place and love it - this seems like a great way to add in pink. The pattern in the couch is subtle and I bet the bolder pattern throw pillows or bolsters will look great. $8.95/yd is an awesome price for a beautiful print!

Kim Wike said:

I think it would actually work. You are right that the fabric is busy, but your couch is simple in form and textile. The pillows would make a nice pop. The greens don’t match they but would go together.

Kaija said:

I love the fabric! Although I like you and tend to go a bit overboard with patterns and color…so maybe you shouldn’t take my advice.

Not related to your question (but I cannot help myself!) I absolutely love your hable construction couch - beautiful! Would you be willing to tell me ~ roughly ~how much it cost to reappholster? I love all their patterns and didn’t even realize one could by them by the yard!

Maren said:

I love the pattern, but I just am not sure it will go with your sofa. What do you think about the same pattern in the “pink” instead of the red? Its not quite as bright, but the pattern is great and it looks like those colors may be a little better against the green. But, maybe that is too boring or not enough “pop” for you. I don’t think I would go for this though, but its not too expensive so you could get it and maybe decide to use it for something else if it doesn’t work.

thanks for all the great feedback! i think i’m going to do it. does anyone know how much fabric i’d need for two med. sized pillows or one bolster?

kaija- the couch was $1,000 to reupholster at loredecorators.com. they’re in manhattan and came to appraise my couch and then picked it up to reupholster it. that was back in the day when i had three jobs (d*s, HG and the philly inquirer) and extra money to reupholster ;)

It works. I would go with a long, narrow bolster. Pillows are there for the color, and you can change it whenever you want to, so why not?

grace said:

ok i did it! i ordered a few yards. i think i’ll have a long bolster made and maybe using a contrasting color for piping. i’ll be sure to post pictures when it’s done. i need to find someone to sew this in brooklyn…all the seamstresses near me that do pillows have closed. bugger!

Try pairing the pattern with a solid by using a 1/4 yard strip of the patterned fabric as an accent stripe or square.

alyson said:

it will totally work!

January 25th, 2008 - 10:36 am

oh make pillow forms… and then make slip covers. I like the idea of it as a stripe on a solid .. But what I really like is the idea of changing the look of the couch on a whim with easily stored pillow covers.. In fact I am going to take my own advise on this one.

kk said:

I got two medium pillows out of a yard and a half of fabric and had some left over, but it depends on the width of the fabric and size of the pillows. Just measure the pillows you want to make, figure out how big a piece you’d need to cover front and back with an inch on each side for seams. And I love the fabric. If it’s a big print I think it will look lovely.

allison said:

i say, do it. no offense intended at all, but whenever you put up pictures of your home i feel it’s all way too minimal and white. you have a lovely home, i’m just saying it could use more pizzazz! that fabric would be a wonderful start and wouldn’t clash with the couch at all.

Stacy said:
January 25th, 2008 - 10:52 am

The contrasting piping on the bolster is a good idea. I’m not naturally drawn to the fabric, but I think it will work with your style (what I’ve deduced from the pics of your place I’ve seen on the site).

i actually just ordered that fabric 3 days ago to make curtains for my bedroom. the walls are a sort of grass green and the bedspread has red and coral and grey in it. i haven’t gotten the fabric yet, but i have been in love with it for a while now! make a bolster, i think it would look great with that fabric.

Robin said:

I like the fabric! As long as the patterns are different sizes, you’ll be fine. As far as production goes, you should ask Lena who her seamstress is. I remember reading in an interview that the woman downstairs from her is the one who does her pillows.

Bridget said:

J said:

Am I the only one who thinks the fabric is a bit too much for the couch? I’m not a fan of that pink with the green of the couch … Definitely think your pillows *should* have some amazing patterns, but maybe not with this fabric?

sosser said:

i think it’d be fun- especially if you mixed a couple of solid or calmer patterned pillows in there. if it doesn’t work out, you can always make a skirt!

Kate said:
January 25th, 2008 - 11:47 am

I thin it would be cool if you made pillows with this fabric on one side, and a different pattern on the other side… 4 different fabrics total, for 3 pillows…. all 3 would have the fassett on the back, and you could alternate which fabrics you have facing out.

January 25th, 2008 - 11:57 am

I always love pink and green together, and I think the patterns will work because the couch pattern is tighter and the pillow fabric is broader. Go for it :)

Patricia said:

I’m a big fan of pink and green right now (I just bought a green and white crib set to go in a pink room and it looks fab)- so I think it will work nicely. It’s going to be kind of crazy-like a quilt, but as has been stated in many previous comments- they are only throw pillows, throw being the key word here (as in throw them out when your tired of them). Besides, you need to change your space according to your attitude, and if your heart says yes, well you only live once.

i guess i imagine a pillow shape/layout such as these http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=8845864 or http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1278&f=26052
with the fabric paired with another fabric(s). i would say white so as not to be too heavy. it makes me think of a japanese obi. a white pillow with a wide floral sash perhaps?

I agree that you should have forms made and slipcovers. Then you can change them out when you want to. Then the choices are limitless!

Sometimes I love a bright cheery color in my home and then other times I want neutral earth colors. Moods change.

Thanks, Grace. I’m in Manhattan so I may just give your upholstery place a call…that actually doesn’t seem terribly expensive…it looks like a big couch!

I’m glad you’re going with the pillows, my best friend always says, “go big or go home”.

Kristin said:

Hi Grace, You will need 1.5 yards for a 2 20″ square pillows. Add 1 yard for welting. Or try a boxed pillow with out welting for a really clean, less standard look.
http://argueinteriors.blogspot.com/2007/12/dons-boxed-pillows.html
These are is 9″x20″x2″ and would need 1.5 yards for 2. The sewing is harder for those though.
I highly recommend using down pillow inserts. They feel better, look better, last better and are natural. Garnet Hill has a nice selection, including the rectangle for the boxed pillow.
Have fun! Pillows are easy to recover.
A beautiful new fabric can still make me so happy…

January 25th, 2008 - 1:52 pm

Bukola said:
January 25th, 2008 - 5:41 pm

I’m late i know, but I think the two colors do complement each other nicely, so i think the flowers on the pillow would make a nice contract to geometric pattern on the couch. And i know I’m playing devils advocate here, but maybe fabric the opposite scheme with maybe mostly close to or/complementary green to your couch with splashes of pink/red instead?

M.E. said:
January 25th, 2008 - 6:04 pm

Absolutely you should make some pillows out of that - and make some napkins for your dining room while you’re at it. That fabric would be great with your red dining room chairs. (Creepy that I know that but I was just looking through your sneek peaks!)

January 25th, 2008 - 6:52 pm

Yes, this works. I’d only do two pillows in this fabric and then I’d add two other pillows to put behind it in a more neutral hue.

neressa said:

That fabric will look wonderful as pillows. You should make either one long pillow (like a short rectangular echo of the couch back but almost the length of the cushions) or two bolsters to tuck in each end. Adorable cat, btw.

Lindsay said:
January 27th, 2008 - 3:15 pm

That fabric is superb! Pink and red are great together, and that’s a great, unusual green. I like Fassett’s colour sense. It would be better perhaps if the green were slightly more dominant, so that you could mostly have a tone-on-tone effect on the sofa with just a little warm accent for contrast, but this will be a punch of colour, but you can always add one throw pillow in a third colour, maybe another green, to tie it all together, because three seems to be the magic number. We make oblong sofa pillows in a 14″x23″ dimension, and they look great - pretty modern. 18 or 20″ squares would be great too (I’d double all these so that you make sure you have the same fabric front and back - it looks better). For bolsters the dimension would be the width (or depth) of your sofa cushions x a circumference of 24″ - 26″ depending. A bit slimmer might look more modern.

January 27th, 2008 - 10:34 pm

I love that fabric — can’t wait to see the results. xo

DO IT!!!! I just made a bag out of this fabric and I have gotten nothing but complements. It’s awesome and would look great with the couch.

Clark said:
January 30th, 2008 - 7:01 pm

Hmmm. Quite honestly I wouldn’t put those two together. It is a bit much. Since your sofa is green dots, why not have pillows with a large dot (or circle) on them? It would be cute in other shades of green, or even other cool colors. Pattern on pattern can be fun, but since your sofa is busy already (in a simple way), I wouldn’t overdo it - unless the fabric you like is in another colorway.
