jacaranda home

two years ago we talked about beautiful oaxacan textiles i’d seen in cookie magazine. it sparked one of the longest lasting conversations d*s has ever seen. to this day i still receive a few emails a day asking where to find this fabric. i never really found an easy, affordable resource but to my surprise, one landed in my inbox yesterday! stafany gonzalez of jacaranda home sent me a link to her beautiful new online shop that sells otomi coverlets just like the ones in the story. stefany explained that these beautiful blankets take over 3 months to make and go to a good cause: supporting families in remote areas of mexico. she carries a wide range of bold colors (i love the orange and blue) and designs pillows from oaxacan fabric as well. all of the products ship from jacaranda’s warehouse in california so prices are affordable for such labor-intensive handmade pieces. you can pick up these coverlets in two sizes ranging from $265-$395 and pillows from $45-$185. enjoy!

this is an interesting thing for folks like us who love design and can tend to follow trends. the question is, after all this time, do you still want it?

What a coincidence! I was in Mexico a couple of months ago and picked up this fabric in orange and red. It is even more beautiful in person — the craftsmanship is outstanding.

While I love that photo of the cat on the bedspread, I don’t know if I’d put this fabric within the reach of any claws.

My sister just came back from Mexico DF and brought that same bed cover in fuchsia (though they are sold as tablecloths). It’s so beautiful! It almost fits a queen-size bed. She paid $100 for it (a bargain!) at Mercado de los Insurgentes. As these textiles are completely embroidered with long stitches they are really delicate, you must be very careful when sitting on it and think it twice before inviting over a little furry friend!!!

OMG! Ever since a trip to Cabo last year, I have been searching the internet for these. While in Mexico, I picked up a small tablecloth and some placemats in a similar pattern but was never able to find something larger. I’m so happy right now! Thanks!

You can also find them on ebay by searchign for “Otomi.” Prices are a tiny bit less than Jacaranda’s, and tablecloths and placemats are also available:

I love how cat lovers (myself included) always seem to get their cat into pictures. Although it’s sometimes because they always seem to be right in the middle of what you’re doing. Gorgeous colors and great cause. Thanks!

This kind of fabric is mostly made by the Otomi of the Tenango de Doria Municipio in Hidalgo. Although the style might also be made in Oaxaca - I wouldn’t call it a Oaxacan textile.

A bit picky, I know–but these are not Oaxacan textiles. The Otomí indigenous people hail from several Mexican states. Many of the people who make these textiles live in Puebla and the state of México–not Oaxaca. You can “find” the textiles in Oaxaca at times because the people know where the tourists are and want to sell their products.

I don’t want to be too pedantic, but based on further research on the internet and some of my books on Mexican craft traditions, I think that sfmaestra is correct. Otomi live all over central Mexico and not only in state of Hidalgo. Therefore these textiles are probably made in other central Mexican states as well. Thanks for the correction!

I know this is might be more info than is needed but to follow up on sfmaestra - the Otomi live chiefly in the state of Mexico, central Hidalgo, and in small parts of Puebla, Veracruz, Queretaro, Michoacan, Tlaxcala, Guanajuato and Morelos.

PS: A question - with the blue wall, amazing morning light, and yellow bedspread - what color pillows should I use? Or what kind of headboard? I’m making drapes out of this grey Amy Butler fabric. Maybe grey pillows? Or a grey headboard?

Wow! I’ve been looking for this exact item in the orange. I can’t believe no one else has mentioned this, but it’s shown as a tablecloth in O at Home, Winter 2007, on page 109. I just love it. Thank you.

Thank you Thank you Grace and Miriam! I’ve been looking for a source ever since kate spade’s mexican-inspired collection a few years back!

Francesca, I love gray and yellow and white. I have blue walls and then all the textiles in my bedroom are black, white and yellow. I’m wondering which other prints might compliment this pattern well - I suppose it would take some experimentation. I hope you share whatever solution you come up with!

i just came across an amazing website - very cool concept - it’s an online trunk show featuring textiles from all over the world. i understand that the person who put this together worked at a travel magazine for many years, and has sourced things from her extended travels. she has these bedspreads, too! site is only up until may 13. but you can also sign up for her mailing list for future collections. this collection that is up on the site now is called ‘textile’ - i hear that ‘object,’ ‘glass,’ ‘collectives’ and ‘india’ are in the works. very cool. check it out!
