i am overjoyed to introduce anne ditmeyer to our tiny d*s family. anne is working with me as our new intern and i couldn’t be happier. a graduate of the university of virginia, anne has lived and worked in paris and has a master’s degree in publications design from the university of baltimore. she now lives and works in baltimore (she and felice wrote the d*s baltimore design guide) as a graphic designer and will be helping me out with the sneak peek column, new projects for the site and adding her own posts as we go along. i just wanted to welcome anne and introduce her to everyone in the audience. and what better way than to have her start with her own “things i’m loving“. so check out anne’s favorites below and stay tuned for more from our fantastic new intern. welcome to the team, anne!

I have known Anne for some time, having first met through a typography course at the Maryland Institute. She is a terrific addition to the Design*Sponge family, as her mature eye, humor, diligence, and worldliness will no doubt strengthen an already terrific source for design ideas and inspiration. Kudos, Anne!

i recently purchased mundane journeys and absolutely love it. i can’t wait for the weather to clear up so i can venture to more places. there’s a great store called park life out on clement that carries the book too!

Thanks for all the awesome comments everyone! I’m so excited to be part of D*S, I can hardly contain myself! As for the top, it was a lucky find in an Amsterdam flea market. It was like a treasure hunt digging through piles of clothes and this shirt was love at first sight! Even better was that I talked my way into getting it for free! (with a few other purchases). :) Glad you all approve!

Hello Anne (spelt the French way , nice !) , looking forward to reading your contributions to d*s ( I love Martine Camillieri , is her work wellknown in the US??). I don’t know if I am the only one to notice this , but I find that you and Grace look really alike , your face features , dark hair,…like sisters ! ;-)

Too funny! I think the real test will be when Grace and I actually meet in person (hopefully soon)!

As for Martine, I don’t think her work is very well known in the US (yet!). I picked up the book at French Touche (www.frenchtouche.com) when I was in Paris last year, but the only place I could find it online these days was French Amazon. (Thanks for posting the link to her website ANV- looks like she has some fun new projects too!).

hey, you posted today a crocheted bottle “dress”, look at this one: http://www.maranta.neostrada.pl/galeria_mamy.htm (i couldn’t find better photo), such crocheted dogs were very popular in poland in 1970’s - kitsch and oldschool :)

Give me a break… an unpaid intern with a master’s degree??? Does this not seem odd to ANYONE else?

I guess long gone are the days of unpaid internships being for young kids in college…and no wonder I’ve had trouble finding a paid job (with only a BFA).

Isn’t anyone else exhausted by the competitiveness, the overqualification? Some days it feels like there’s just no way to catch up…

Anne: welcome. I wish you to find paid work too. No one with a master’s should have to be taking unpaid internships (I can only hope your doing it for fun, in which case isn’t some art student missing out on a learning opportunity?).

*sigh* I digress.

Jen, don’t worry, I have a full time job as well. But I don’t think of this as unpaid work at all, but rather an amazing opportunity that pays in other ways. Grace is wonderful at what she does puts so much back into the site, and she doesn’t have a disposable income at the moment, but who knows what will happen down the line. What I’ll be doing for D*S is not that different than what I already do, and the fact that I keep my own blog. This experience builds on everything I’ve done, and lets me put my best skills, knowledge, strengths and passion to use, and I couldn’t be happier. For me it’s a huge step forward!

My first job out of undergrad teaching English in Paris. The pay was LOW, but hey, I was living in Paris (and also got experience *interning* at a magazine - that “paid” me in experience and opportunities and things I wouldn’t have gotten to do otherwise). Paris is also where I discovered design. Then I moved to Baltimore and took a design internship at a theater (and started grad school–I got academic credits for the internship)- pay was low, but housing was included, and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had, and it’s why I’m where I’m at now. I’ve always been one to jump on opportunities, and each comes with its own perks. You meet people along the way who stick with you. (And you pick up random side work too, like wedding photography or dressing up like costumed characters…not kidding). I don’t know, maybe I’m just an intern for life ;) . . . I work hard at what I do, I don’t live an extravagant lifestyle.

As for my master’s, I actually got it while working full time (what can I say, I like to have a lot on my plate!!!), but this time with a job with a real salaried position and benefits. The beauty of the UB Publications Design master’s program is that classes are at night. Most students work full time while they get it–which actually taught me a lot because what I learned in school helped me at work, and vice versa.

Don’t give up hope! There’s something out there for everyone! Hard work does pay off! And each opportunity leads to the next.
