things i’m loving: black and yellow and brown

Minaret-Group-ChristmasWeb
i’m feeling a little split-personality this morning. i’m finding myself drawn to both yellow and black (together, but not in a bumble bee way) and woodsy cabin chic (or things that are dark brown and plaid). this probably explains why my house never feels finished- by the time i’ve finished one look i’ve always mentally moved on to another. so for the time being, here are some of my favorites in both styles.

[image above, clockwise from top left: black and white droplet mug $10.95 (via door sixteen), niche modern lighting, ficucia magnetic vases and candleholders $180, mercer sunglass case $78, 1900’s sterling dove motif hair comb $80, string 10 light $99, round yellow basket $85, ipanema clutch wallet $158 (via joy)]

things-2
[image above, clockwise from top left: million rings floor mirror $348, great brown owl tray $175, 1890s sword brooch $80, tartan coin purse $28, solomon placemats $48 (ok, not woodsy but i love them), woods vase by john derian $725, vanilla orchid teapot $48, new woodgrain pieces from three by three seattle]

I’ve been waiting for an appropriate place to post this question, and since this is a split personality post about multiple interests, seems like this is a good time.

I’m really, REALLY interested in those “Keep Calm & Carry On” prints I’ve seen in some of the sneak peaks. Any idea where I can get one?

P.S. I LOVE that little plaid coin purse in the woodsy pic.

The black and yellow reminded me of an article I clipped a few months ago from Country Living (yes, I read Country Living because I read EVERY design magazine!). An adorable bungalow with some dramatic use of yellow and black. (i LOVE the porch curtains). Here is the link if you want to check it out. http://www.countryliving.com/homes/house-tours/decorating-with-yellow-0207?click=main_sr

i am considering doing a black and white with yellow mix in our bathroom, and have really been worried that it won’t work. but, after seeing this post, i feel good about it. thank you!

have a lovely day!

Beth, you act as if reading Country Living is bad. Nothing wrong with loving all styles of design. Who made/makes you feel that way?

Yellow is always a tricky one for me but it does seem to be positioning itself as the new “it” color. (You’d think I’d love it more given all the grey here in the NW…?)

I totally am in the woodsy thing these days. The floor mirror? Well, I can’t say I couldn’t have gone without the temptation, Grace. ;)

I think it is because I get the Country Living magazines from my Mom who decorates in a primitive country style and this is what I grew up with (not liking it so much). You are so correct though - I actually think it is a great magazine. I guess I should just be glad that my Mom passed on her love of design and be more aware that different tastes are a good thing!

This is the theme I came up with for my last shop update, but I merged them together, yellows and wood texture/primitive pieces. They actually look great together!

I agree, Country Living has really done a great job of updating their magazine and the rooms have a cleaner looker now.

I think this is really bizarre. I am in the process of planning a wedding and the colors are black and yellow (and I always say, not in a bumblebee sort of way!) and the theme is vintage Adirondack cabin / woods.
More posts about these things would be great! Keep up the superb work Grace!

That Country Living link was great!
Thanks for posting that, Beth! I especially loved the room with the big, ornate mirror.
