2008 D*S DIY Contest: VOTE! [entries 5-8]

[Note: Today we’ll be posting the top 20 Finalists in the 2008 D*S DIY Contest. Four finalists will be posted an hour from 9 am to 1pm. Once you’ve seen the top 20 click here to cast your vote. Details on today’s voting process are right here]

5. Kellie’s DIY Bedroom

  • Description: Kelly’s Bedroom is a DIY project in itself: the headboard, dresser and painted chandelier are all DIY projects completed by Kellie and her husband. The chandelier was made using a projector, the dresser was painted and gift wrap was added for decoration, and the headboard was made from a wooden frame, foam and fabric.

6. Kate’s Wallpaper Fireplace

  • Description: Kate moved into an apartment with a non-working fireplace that had an ugly tile front. Since she’s a renting, she wanted to do something that wouldn’t permanently damage the fireplace. So Kate adhered wallpaper to foam core (cut to fit the fireplace) using rubber cement and bought trim/molding from Home Depot and painted it to match the walls.

7. Kate’s Framed Wall Sconces

  • Description: Inspired by ‘awesome’ galvanized outdoor wall lights she found at Home Depot for $30 a piece, Kate created these framed DIY sconces to ‘bring that industrial feel of an outdoor fixture indoors’. Her project required only simple materials like mat board, fabric, paint, frames and glue.

8. Benita’s Frosted Doors

  • Description: The doors to Benita’s son’s room were brown with ‘ugly patterned yellow glass panels’. So she removed and recycled the yellow glass, painted the door frames and inserted frosted perspex panels. Then she cut ‘zillions’ of circles from Avery etched glass film adhesive and applied them in a decorative pattern.

I’m confused about “Kate’s wallpaper fireplace”…I don’t think the pics match the description. Are the images from a different entry?

Does #6 have the right photo?

Looks like there is a little mixup with the fireplace pic…I’m dying to see that one because we just signed a lease on an apartment with a non-functional fireplace!

I might be missing something, but #6’s (the wallpaper fireplace) description does not match the photo above it - a leaning wooden bookcase.

All of these are fantastic! Voting is going to be tough. I’m not quite understanding “Kate’s Wall Paper Fireplace”, but I love the reclaimed-wood-display-shelf project. Congrats to all!

Now there are two 7’s - the latter of which (or #8 the frosted doors), looks great!

The framed wall sconces are a really lovely idea! And I love what Kellie did with the dresser. Voting is going to be so difficult!

Kellie’s bedroom has got to be the winner - she did an entire room DIY including a handpainted chandelier, a dresser and a headboard! What a crafty person! Looks beautiful

Benita’s cat shot is awesome. I wish I could make my cat yawn on demand.

That fireplace idea is amazing. To be honest, that wallpaper is ugly and I would never have picked it out in a million years, but is looks so beautiful in that room. And love the bunny bookholders, Kate must be getting ready for Easter!

Wow, I just love the creativity that everyone has!! I’ve got so many great ideas now.

P.S. #8 and #7 are beautifully photographed.

Haha, he didn’t actually yawn on demand… I think he got bored with modeling. Now that he’s seen himself on D*S though he feels pretty special :)

These are all great but I NEED to know what paint colour Kate (#2) used on her walls. I love that green.

Would Kate be willing to share the model of light she used to create her sconces? I found a very similar light at Home Depot, but it didn’t have that great glass globe and cage.

March 15th, 2008 - 9:13 am

I vote for the yawning cat!

Hi there, Sorry it took me so long to respond. The lights I used for the wall sconces are definitely still available at home depot. The name of it is below…

Exterior Cottage Wall Lantern Brushed Nickel Finish W/ Clear Seedy Glass

You can check them out on the home depot website!

Also the name of the paint color I used in my living room is 289B-4 Sliced Avocado in interior satin (Which I thought was a great name!) I got it at Home Depot, it was a Valspar brand paint. Hope all of that helps!! I’m so glad you guys liked them! Good Luck

That fireplace is such a wonderful idea. My favorite, but I do really enjoy the idea of the sconces. As for the frosted doors, I wish there was an image of the door itself… Im trying to figure out where it is… haha.

Kellie, love your bedroom and awesome job on the chandelier! Can you tell us what color of gray paint you used?

Kellie said:

Lane - the gray color of the walls in the bedroom is Sherwin Williams 7015 Repose Gray in satin finish. Hope that helps!

I love the headboard Kellie! I’ve been looking for an inexpensive headboard and have entertained the idea of making one myself. Can you share the pattern/instructions??

That chandelier is available for purchase as a decal on about 100 websites. Of course it takes some skill to paint it yourself, it is not an original idea? In fact many of your own advertisers sell the decal (Blik, anyone.)

I loved Benita’s frosted doors. Where do you get frosted perspex panels? Well done to all the creative people.
