a d*s wedding

since my engagement, i promised that d*s wouldn’t become an all-weddings, all-the-time blog, and i promise to stay true to my word. but now that we’ve done a little wedding location visiting i thought i’d share some of my rough inspiration pages just for fun. i’d like to keep a large portion of our wedding private because it’s one of the few aspects of my life that isn’t already online but i figured a little inspiration scrap-booking couldn’t hurt. and don’t worry, if you’re itching for wedding material we have a series of wedding-themed guest blogs coming up soon. our trip down to savannah was cut a little bit short because of my sickness (great time to catch the flu, grace) but this much we know, this time next year, ac and i will be tying the knot in sunny savannah, ga. our location details aren’t finalized but it will be outside and i hope to be surrounded by spanish moss, azaleas and big, beautiful magnolia leaves.

because i have so much time to do planning, i’m going to DIY as much of the big day/weekend as possible- focusing on using kraft paper, tan linen or soft burlap as the background. the entire d*s site re-design was planned around that color as the backdrop because for me, everything looks so great against that textured neutral. where to go from there? i’m torn between bright spring greens with accents of aged metallics (flecked and antique feeling) or rich reds and magentas mixed in with pinks (accented with a little bit of moss green here and there). i figure when we get down to the details i’ll lean on our baker, chery day of back in the day bakery, for some artistic input. also, because we’re getting married in savannah i plan to work with as many scad alums and students and possible- i want to keep things simple and local. so, here are just a few of my ideas so far, i hope you’ll enjoy them. if you need more wedding inspiration be sure to check out my favorites: style me pretty, brooklyn bride and martha stewart weddings. [image above by katie runnels]

[image above: to say that i love that bouquet is a massive understatement. i neeed that bouquet- down to the striped ribbon and little buckle. oh man, i love it. and why is that woman in there? well she has a gorgeous red/magenta top and is sitting against a gorgeous olivey/mossy wall- it looks better in person, sorry]

[image above: forsyth park, my favorite spot in savannah; a pretty feather head option and a red trio color trio that i love]

[image above: paper lanterns for an outdoor wedding; beautiful pink and red blooms in a gold vase (i love a nice aged gold with red/pink flowers); paper flower tags from royal buffet at etsy]

[image above: paper flowers (so fun), bright spring greens, a silvery green sash, an aged gold print from a box of mine, shades of green dresses and feathers in a bouquet (i'm a sucker for soft feathers)]

[image above: not the cake so much as the print in the back- a gorgeous vintage floral with bright pops of color that feel modern; a little daisy cake i'd be proud to call my own; paper flags- we'll have to mark off an outdoor wedding somehow so i hope to commission some beautiful handmade fabric ribbons and banner/flags (tasteful ones, of course) from the scad fiber dept.]

[image above: hair (to put it up or keep it down? only the humidity will decide that i guess]

[image above: inspired by julia rothman's cards for hello lucky, i thought it would be fun to have a collection of vintage frames hanging at different heights from wire at the reception to make impromptu photo spots for guests. that way they, and the gorgeous garden or park, becomes an instant work of art]

I still have the very first MSWeddings that I bought when we were engaged over 9 years ago. Loved all the planning and inspiration and ideas (and dreaming!) I’m sure your wedding will be gorgeous! Savannah is a lovely place!
Good luck with your wedding plans!

Have fun Grace!

Wedding planning is so much fun (until it’s not — everyone has a little breakdown moment at some point, but that passes).

All these images are gorgeous.

My only advice is to try and get regular suppliers as much as possible. Somehow add “wedding” to any word and the price triples i.e, wedding photographer. But you know this.

And if you (ac) have limited vacation time, I suggest using some of it before the wedding especially when you’re getting married away from “home”. My husband and I had a week in the wedding location before the guests arrived and it was better than the honeymoon.

Congrats again!

Good luck with your plans! Savannah is such a beautiful place for a wedding, and you couldn’t have picked a better time of year for your ceremony :) There are so many talented, creative people here, I’m sure you won’t have any trouble finding the perfect local artisans to help with the event!

Grace, what’s your source for kraft paper? I’ve been looking everywhere for kraft paper that’s not sold by the roll or huge sheets.

I couldn’t be happier that you’re getting married and sharing with us. I’ll make notes. I’m also pretty sure you won’t let it take over the site. However, many wedding ideas can be translated into real life so it seems like people could get inspiration if they looked for it.

Grace,
I LOVE the idea of hanging frames so guests can take pictures with them! It will be so pretty as decoration and also serve a great purpose. I am also so glad that you chose Savannah as your spot and touched that you want to use the Fibers department for help!!!! I miss that place!-Kara

ooh! we’re thinking of the photobooth idea, too. but it seems pretty pricey (upwards of 2k for the day) so we may have to pass- but it sounds like such a fun idea.

Looks like you have so many great ideas. And I love the color stories you are considering. Might I convince you towards the reds/corals/pinks?? I love that myself, and also you have reds in your house a lot it seems, and in the bedroom, so you must really love those colors. I think it really gives that needed “depth” to the Southern wedding and will look Amazing with the magnolia leaves and the white and black architectural details in a city like Savannah. Either way you can’t go wrong but that is my two cents!
As far as any anti-wedding sentiments go, these pics can be used to inspire all kinds of ideas for your readers interiors and gardens. A good pic is a good pic, a great color story is a great color story, period. Keep sharing!

Hey Grace

I just featured a “real wedding”on my site where the couple had a DIY photobooth. Her husband just ventured into photography so they already had the photo equipment, so it was free for them. Maybe you find a SCAD photography student who would be open to working with you on it for a reasonable price. I cant to see what else you come up with!

The Sentient Bean on 13 E Park Ave, on the south side of Forsyth Park, is a wonderful coffee shop and community gathering spot. Perhaps if you want to offer gourmet, organic, fair trade coffee/tea on the big day? they are right there and the owner Kristin is incredibly friendly and reliable. http://www.sentientbean.com

Beautiful! Savannah is one of my favorite places and had I visited before tying the knot, it may have served as the location! My husband and I visited to celebrate our second wedding anniversary and stayed at the Mansion on Forsyth Park. The location was fantastic and I fell in love with Forsyth Park. I took a gazillion pictures and can only imagine how stunning it would be as a backdrop for a wedding {assuming this is where you’ll be tying the knot}.

Anyway, I just wanted to say your ideas are fantastic and I have a feeling you’ll be enjoying the wedding of your dreams before you know it! Congratulations!

p.s. You were fantastic on GMA!

Oooo the Kraft paper at the paper-source is great. http://paper-source.com/cgi-bin/paper/results/results.html?search_term=kraft&search=search The one with the white flourishes – they make those flourishes in different sized stamps. That would make it easy to use as a theme pattern. Would look great in red. http://naomimarriesmike.com

Every time I tried to convince my family that an outdoor wedding would be gorgeous, they got all “what if it rains” on me. Are you thinking of getting a tent and if not, how do you plan to deal with the rain possibility? I am always looking for good responses to this question for my totally weather-obsessed mother.

Having been involved in many outside weddings, and others, I would just add to “keep it simple”. Stay away from anything that requires several people to arrive in work clothes at the site an hour or more prior to the wedding. Those poor souls won’t get a chance to shower, they’ll be changing behind a tree! And in the end, few will notice, and even less will remember their efforts.
It’s all about the wedding couple, remember?
p.s. Maybe a special weekly post on weddings would satisfy this subject?

Congratulations! I noticed the question about hair. I decided to wear mine up, because I didn’t want my wedding pictures to look like a time-lapse of my hair looking fresh in the beginning and wilted at the end. I married in Boston in August — definitely not a good hair month! Your inspiration board is beautiful!

I found it in my internet grazing. You may know it already.
Also, maybe you want to set up a separate section for the wedding planning stuff, so those who LOVE it can go there, and those who don’t, won’t. It’s lovely and all, but I guess I like some wedding-free zone areas of my life, and this was one of them…

Be sure to check out @Home (www.vintagegeneral.com) and Kiwi Fleur (www.kiwifleur.com). Both do amazing work! Also, if you’re looking for a place to stay (or for guests), check out Suites on Lafayette for a beautiful (very Savannah) and spacious home away from home. Also, if you are planning to do welcome bags, we would love to provide some great items from SCAD. Feel free to email me at ghunt@scad.edu.

For rain locations try the Roundhouse Railroad Museum: http://www.chsgeorgia.org/roundhouse/
I’m having my reception there in September. It’s a lovely site, and nonprofit too! Any money goes towards the restoration of the building. There are also several other museums that could hold possible reception/rain locations.

Another word of advice, getting married in Forsyth is AWESOME, but they rent the park out in sections by the acre. There can as many as 4 weddings going on at once! The azaleas bloom in Mid to late March and wedding session kicks into high gear around nowish, so hopefully you won’t have any problems. But pull those permits with the city ASAP!!!!

Good luck!!! :)
