rug roundup part two: patterned rugs (part 1 of2)

when i set out to build a guide to my favorite rugs in the market, i knew that tackling patterned rugs (as opposed to runners and solid-colored rugs) would be a hefty task. so rather than try to post all 70 images (some of which are collaged images of 4 or more designs) at once, i’m dividing the patterned-rugs guide into part 1 and 2. today is part one and next week i’ll run the second half- there were just too many to take in at once. so, i hope you’ll enjoy patterned rugs part one (i’ve tried to include a wide range of prices and styles)- tune in next week for part two. if you’d like to see part one, runners, just click here! for the full post on patterned rugs, click here- or just click “read more” below, there are 22 more rugs below.

Hi Grace,

Some beautiful rugs here!

Do you have any advice on incorporating a patterned rug into a room that already has some color and pattern going on? I have a lovely red-and-gold rug in my living room that I’m getting rid of now, because it’s just too constricting in terms of what else I can do in the space in the form of other colors and patterns. I love bold and graphic patterned rugs, but need something that will let me change up the other textiles, patterns, and colors in the room at whim. I’m at a loss about what to do other than getting a solid-colored neutral …

Any tips on mixing and matching rugs with other patterned elements are most appreciated!

The Dash & Albert runner pictured is one of their polypropylene indoor/outdoor rugs.

leah

sure thing- normally it depends a little on how bold people are willing to go.

but in general i try to pay attention to scale. if the room is full of small-scale patterns, i’d try to find a ruge with a larger-scale pattern so it breaks things up a bit. a whole room of one-scale pattern can be a little much ;)

and you’ll want to find colors that compliment each other- or are at least tonal variations on each other. all one color can be too much, too.

for inspiration i always like to browse the situation shots that stores use when promoting/selling their rugs.

best of luck!

I bought a great pink patterned rug at the Madeline Weinrib sample sale. Doesn’t really fit in the room I bought it for. If anyone wants to take it off my hands see it here:

For some reason the link for ikat synthetic rug $169+, is directing us to the previous link for overlapping squares rug.

Anyone know where to find the ikat?

Thanks!

Grace, I just moved into a new space and have a blank canvas. I find myself checking out your guides a few times a day for different pieces! Thanks so much for your amazing work. :)
