our first sneak peek comes from mackenzie farquer of SITEdesign who can practically say she lives on sesame street (she lives across the street from kaufmann astoria studios in queens, where that and many other shows are filmed). once there she fell in love with the neighborhood, making it a no-brainer to open up shop there too (it’s fun seeing how her home reflects her shop). all i know is that i’m ready to permanently move into her backyard for the summer. thanks to mackenzi and her partner for opening up their home today! read on and you can find more, full-sized images here. stay tuned for a second sneak peek at 2pm today! -anne.
[above: our backyard- those cubes light up at night and glow beautifully. the chair is a reproduction french mid-century chair from SITE]

Most of the items in our home are vintage pieces. The mirror is my good friends grandmother’s, the attorney bookcase is from a great dealer upstate and holds all our barware. Both the chair and sofa in the Living Room are vintage I’ve had locally reupholstered.

This is our sanctuary- our backyard!! I had been searching for a place in Astoria with a yard when something happened to come up that was very near the store and had a great yard- so lucky!! The lanterns are nylon and can hold up to the elements, the Panton chairs are from a great yearly sale at Props For Today (a movie and film prop rental house in Chelsea), the table is from SITE. The fence color is yet another excuse for me to live out all my color dreams.

The giant map of Europe above our sofa is from the early 40’s- it more or less dictated the color palette for the whole room. I had the sofa before finding the map, so it was a happy coincidence when I got it home and they went perfectly together! The coffee table/trunk is actually the very first thing I bought to go to college with way back when. It was purchased at the Container Store and it was all shiny and new looking- I love the way its aged- another happy accident.

The bedroom was just another excuse for me to use lots and lots of color. The artwork is actually a rendering chart I made in design school that my blog partner, Emily, convinced me to frame in a custom modern floating frame and I’m eternally grateful that she did!!!

This is our office area that we never ever use. There’s something so natural about sitting with coffee and laptop time at the kitchen table that this areas goes sadly ignored. The map of the solar system is an old teacher’s aid from the 50’s that I bought on Ebay. The silhouette pillow I bought at a Thomas Paul sample sale years back- I was surprised when I showed up to the sale and the designer himself opened the door. It turned out it was at his apartment!!

This is my favorite vignette in the apartment! I’ve been collecting snowglobes since I was about 12- this is just a small sampling of the ones I’ve gotten on my travels. The custom state paint-by-numbers were made for me by Something’s Hiding in Here. I spent a lot of time in both Illinois and Wisconsin in my teens and twenties and thought these were great reminders of some amazing times I had had. And I’m crazy about paint-by-numbers, but that’s another story.

I love chalkboard anything. One of my goals for the apartment was to combine lots and lots of natural textures and elements- marble, shell, grasses, etc.
