does anyone know if you could use this kind of paint to cover a wood-ish table from ikea/pottery barn, etc? you know, something that is wood veneer with a top coat? could I just paint over it, as is.

Julia- I’ve painted over wood-ish stuff before. I usually rough it up a little with sandpaper, prime (with Kilz or something similar) and then paint. You can also use gel stain (which, if done right, can look like real wood) but I wouldn’t recommend it on a piece that would have a rough life…it can scratch off.

I sanded and scraped with a wirebrush, and also cleaned them with tsp. for non-wood, I’d sand lightly and wash with tsp. as cjh said, only for a non-high-use piece, this paint will scratch off non-wood pieces.

Julia; Kilz primer works great on the wood veneer and I have used it without sanding on a piece like that.

Love this! I’m so glad this was featured today. Yesterday, I picked up 4 free vintage chairs that are very ugly. I’m excited to do this project. I’m painting them from ugly look alike mahogany from the 60’s-70’s to a french-english inspired buttery cream and replacing the chair seats with a toile fabric. Love the modern look with the sleek black paint. Lovely!

I’m one of the so-called “purists” here who has not always appreciated the painted wood objects that appear. However, these chairs I love! Very, very nice.

I am SO in love with this fabric! The makeover is absolutely amazing. My husband was trying to find something for us to do today and now I finally know what. We’re going to the local Goodwill store to find a piece of furniture to rehab. I’ve been wanting a new project…thanks for the inspiration!

Your refurbished chairs are beautiful! They are very feminine, they are like little ladies. Aside, thank you for including the specific paint used, I am making over my chairs this weekend and I was not sure exactly what paint to use. Did you use a brush, or did you spray the paint? Love them!

Love the chairs! What I’m really wondering about though is the picture located in the After picture. Is that wallpaper framed? I’m looking for a wallpaper like that for my bathroom but haven’t been able to find one I love. But I LOVE that.

Jessicca: It is wallpaper (silver with black flocked velvet!), but it was a thrift find and is dated 1970!

How do you get your brush strokes so even so they are not visible? Your chairs are flawless and the paint looks so smooth! Great job! Very inspirational!
