Illustration Inspiration

plank1_1.jpg
Having gone to school for illustration, I’m a huge fan. I’m constantly inspired by other people’s work. Even though I don’t really paint much anymore, I love to take the queue for a new color scheme, or particular feel from a painting and interpret it into a new design. One of my all-time favorite sources for inspiration is the Condé Nast store, where you can view and order prints of magazine covers from as far back as 1910. George W. Plank is one of my favorite cover artists from this era and his work, especially his patterns, constantly offer creative fodder. Above is a detail from his cover, Dec 1, 1913. And below, details from his cover Nov. 1, 1915, and Nov. 1, 1914, respectively.

When I’m looking for a more modern point of view, I head over to Sanna Annukka’s website. Her Maidens of the Midnight Sun have been on my artwork wishlist for ages, and someday, I WILL own them. In the meantime, I settle for a quick browse thru her Icons section. Love the turkeys!

And last, but not least, (when I need to get in touch with my quirky, artistic side), I might stop off and visit fellow d*s guest blogger Julia Rothman. I love her use of color and her attention to detail. The “Luxury Apartments” hang in my dining room.

I love Julia Rothman’s prints! I really, really like her giraffes with the long necks. They kind of look like the “luxury” apts, actually, in their tallness.

Those magazine covers are so beautiful. The use of colour and line is stunning! I’m inspired, thankyou *
