project runway season 5: welcome back, old friend

first-group.jpg
oh, project runway. i want to look away and not get pulled into another season but each time i find myself going back for more- despite the fact that i cringe every time i have to hear the phrase, “furnished by tresemme- professional haircare“. that “professional haircare” part bugs me every time. but last night i couldn’t resist watching (or jezebel inspired snap judging), so i thought it would be fun to dish (and hear you guys dish) about the show. but unless i want to come home to an inbox flooded with “why did you tell us what happened! i didn’t get to see the show yet!” emails, i’d better keep the conversation going after the jump. so click here, or just click “read more” below, to join the fun. or as tim gunn would say: “holla at your boy”. (or girl)

[i wish there was a better header picture to use above but they seem to have skimped on the pretty photoshopped "full cast" photo too. and publishing each episode theme and guest host for the whole season already? such a bummer. broken contract or not i'll miss the element of surprise.]

alright- phew! it’s after the jump and safe to talk about what happened last night. namely, they got rid of one of my favorite guys right off the bat. poor jerry. i feel like he was really misunderstood. either that or i was totally on a lean cuisine high (my dinner of choice when ac works late) and imagined that those clips of his outside work looked rad. he seemed so sweet and though i’ll admit his outfit was very american psycho (that other cast mate nailed the description), i thought it showed some thought and bits of inspiration here and there. i couldn’t have pulled that look off but i like to think that some tall girl on 5th avenue could. oh well, maybe the chemicals in the frozen food have started to go to my head.

poor cut jerry aside, here were my initial thoughts (jotted down on bits of paper around my living room):

1. HOW MUCH DO I LOVE CUTE MARC JACOBS BOY? in his cute little walking shorts and neat hair? swoon. i circled his name like a dozen times on my note sheet while watching- i just want to be his best friend and walk around the village trying on clothes with him. he seems super cute and sweet and like he just walked off a page of the sartorialist.

2. jennifer: i love jennifer. why? i feel like she’s like the first “normal” person i’ve ever seen on the show. you know how everyone on the show is all done-up with crazy hair and makeup and they just have that “pop” on screen? she doesn’t have any of that- and for me, that’s not a bad thing. she seems like you could give her a call and talk for hours about that special “anne of green gables” marathon that pbs is running. even her cast page photo looks like it would fit in perfectly next to my high school yearbook staff shot (though her shoes are way cuter). i like her and i hope she sticks around.

3. portland girl (leanne): she named her fashion line “leanimal“. how can you not love her? (and how fab was the jacket she wore on her first day? click here to check out her full, awesome, line)

4. terri: terri, terri, terri. when i saw the green jumpsuit in her portfolio slideshow the only thing i thought was “oh man, she was sooo lucky to make it in.” i know that’s awful but i just hope they picked some bad (or very old) shots to show as her portfolio. and the sort of wide collar, 1970s oil-stain print shirt? ack! as tim would say, it has me perplexed.

5. headband girl (emily): i wish those hippy headbands weren’t in right now. i just don’t get that trend. all i can think is: “forehead breakouts”. at least that’s what would happen to me. that and i’m sure one of the high school kids on my street would point and laugh.

(intermission: how fantastically gorgeous was that black and white diane von furstenburg dress they kept showing in the commercials? her office is across the street from ac’s office and i’m always dying to look in and watch her work.)

6. final runway looks: at first kelli didn’t catch my eye but that dress was incredible. imaginative, creative, artistic and i’d buy it in a heartbeat (she made hook and eye closures from a notebook spiral for gosh sakes). ditto for daniel, who i also love (even if he reminds me of mario from season 1). i love that jerell used that lawnchair material, joe’s pasta chevrons were great, and my marc jacob boy’s yellow dress was ready for henri bendel already.

and because i love making silly predictions: i hope that wesley, my marc jacobs faux-best friend, takes the cake. but i think kelli, daniel and leanne will do well. and maybe kennell, too. so i guess that wasn’t much of a prediction as much as a lump of people i think seem great so far.

have anything to add? dish away….

too many people trying to have a fake personality. suede? girlicious? ugh.

I think Joe may be this year’s Michael. I’m putting my money on him.

The skirt of Kelli’s dress was gorgeous.

And, watch out for DVF’s sample sale. They hold it in her office which is fun to see.

I wish Kelli had had a bit more time to make the coffee filters less obvious, but overall did like her dress alot. The vaccuum cleaner bag skirt was gorgeous.

I think blue cup dress got robbed. I get why the winner won, but I thought the cup dress was pretty amazing.

Also LOVE MARC JACOBS BOY!!! And love his shorts.

And my last thought is: I LOVE Ann of Green Gabels! Best books ever.

I get so inspired when I watch. One night, season 3, I made a “pre project runway skirt” … finished it up before the show. I felt so great that night. Then I had a baby, and I can barely find the time to even clear my sewing table.

Was it just me or was Blayne incredibly irritating?

I had no idea Project Runway was moving to Lifetime! It does explain the fact that I had no idea the new season started last night and had to stay up till 1AM and catch a rerun.

I can’t believe they didn’t at least run a commercial about it.

As for the contestants I loved Jennifer, Daniel, Korto, Kelli, and Leanne.

I feel really bad that Jerry was the first to go. I don’t know what he was thinking with that raincoat dress thing but the items they showed from his portfolio looked really nice. I’m not sure how he ended up creating something so hideous.

So excited PR is back on. Bummed that they revealed all the episodes and guest judges though. Did we really need to know that? I loved that each week was a surprise. Kind of takes the shine off it all.
I agree with Janet about Kelli’s coffee filters. Loved her skirt but I wish the filters were less filter-esque. Looking forward to seeing what Leanne, Jennifer, and MJ boy do…early favorites, but I’m sure that will all change next week.

it’s only been one episode and i am so over stella (the punk rocker). the challenge was about innovation, and then she spends a lifetime that her trash bag fabric was worthless and unusable. wahhhh- we get it, even with a incredibly fabric-like material you can’t make it work. yeah, jerry’s outfit was straight out of a psycho killer movie- but i feel like his garment was constructed better than stella’s and had more thought behind it.

other than that, i cannot WAIT to see what jennifer comes up with (she’s too adorable) and i have a feeling blayne is going to be a hoot

I almost squealed when I went to see what my TiVo was taping and saw that it was Project Runway!

It was refreshing to see some portfolios this time that actually seem wearable day-to-day.

And totally agree with Julia on the overly forced catch phrases. End it.

there’s an anne of green gables marathon on pbs?!

oh, project runway>/i>, how i love thee. i feel like it’s too early to pick my faves, but i was glad kelli won and i loved both of the bright yellow dresses that went down the runway. hated jerry’s outit, although he did seem like a sweet guy. it must be so hard to be the first one eliminated…

I understand that the judges try and judge each show independently, but looking at Jerry’s body of work and looking at Stella’s body of work it’s hard to imagine getting much out of Stella other than black “leather” in every episode. I’m more curious about what Jerry’s vision entails. I would think they would take that into account particularly on the first episode.

July 17th, 2008 - 10:07 am

I felt badly for Jerry too - although that was not an attractive outfit - particularly the mess underneath it. The yellow dress made of paper table cloth was beautiful and while the material was easier to work with than, say, trashbags, she did a great job. The rest were kind of a blur…

On a different, yet related subject - Top Design is premiering September 3!

I don’t think I’d personally wear Kelli’s dress, but that being said, SHE ROCKED THAT CHALLENGE!! Hands Down, it’s the most creative thing I’ve ever seen on PR. I mean, SHE MADE HER OWN TEXTILES! Has anyone EVER done that before? I think she’s RAD and I am rooting for her from now on!

Kate said:

Man! I feel like such a hater. I thought Jerry was fairly auf’d. His attitude: “Tablecloths and mops? I would throw that in the trash.” And then he used a shower curtain. Brilliant, dude.

Blayne is grooooss (orange tan, bleached hair combed to cover receding hairline, crazy eyes… too much), and Jennifer is just blah. (That said, I do love A0GG.)

I liked Kelli’s ideas, Wesley’s determination with those cups, and Korto’s execution of the produce! So excited that PR is back :o)

I, too, thought the cup dress would win for sure and did you see how annoyed its creator looked when he didn’t win? It’s going to be a great season. Blayne is hilarious and is totally on something, right? Or maybe its just the fumes from the tanning salon…

July 17th, 2008 - 11:31 am

We don’t even get this series yet in the UK - but your sheer excitement at it has got me hooked without even watching! The marc Jacobs boy as you refer to him has made me feel very very old! keith@absolutezerodegrees.com

I love Wesley! He’s too cute! Blayne needs to go and it seems like he’s trying to make “-licious” this seasons “fierce.”

July 17th, 2008 - 12:33 pm

This season is going to so GOOD!!!

Could they please drop Suede though asap. Even if it turns out he’s talented, I can’t handle people referring to themselves in the third person that much.

As many of you said, I think Jerry’s shower coat disaster was fair game for his getting eliminated. Especially that dress that poor girl was wearing underneath! it looked like violet paper napkins stuffed underneath some mesh netting—SO wrong. and those yellow gloves?! dont even get me started. MJ boy looks exactly like one of the sartorialist’s pictures, and his yellow dress was very cute. HATE blayne, im still wondering what that black and diaper “outfit”(?) was. What was it?! I love the Portland girl, her look is SO portland and I hope she makes it far (im just biased). Either way I hope the talent on this season is as or higher than last, it seems tough to beat. They better bring it!

July 17th, 2008 - 3:00 pm

Ugh, someone needs to smack the Tan Man. He is trying WAY TOO HARD to make “girlicious” the “fierce” of this season, and it’s so uncomfortably forced. As far as favorites go, Daniel, Emily, and Kenley are my faves. I loved the skirt of Kelli’s dress, but the rest of it was meh.

Unfortunately the more annoying people stood out last night, this early in the game: Blayne and his sniiiiiiffing; Suede, a grown-ass man, referring to himself as Suede; and the girl who laughed too loud, as if to say: look at me! I laugh loud! That said, I was sad for Jerry, but surprised that so many people selected fabric-like materials - what were they thinking?! And I’m sure the producers thought they could get more drama out of Stella than Jerry. Sorry, Jer.

Go Leanne! She was our prizewinner a few years back when I was one of the judges for the Portland Mercury’s annual fashion show. It’s great having someone represent our fair city. Now that she’s back in pdx is must be so weird watching herself and suddenly be written about everywhere…

Yes! Eliz. I was thinking the same thing. The sniffing from Blayne was annoying and gross too. I mean, maaybe he had a cold or something *hope that’s all it is* and we won’t be seeing/hearing it all season. But come on! At least they could edit it out, right?

Ah…wow …really???
Did I see the same show as everyone else?
That was terrible….those designers for the most part were tragic and oh so boring!
Kelli’s “fabric” treatment was pretty cool but the actual dress???? eck!!!! The yellow look was lovely if a bit simple. The cup dress snore! Some general ugliness all around. And in another transparent producer move the keep the old “Rocker-Junkie” and tossed the guy who had real talent (psycho rainwear aside…i’ve seen his stuff!) in hopes for phony reality drama.
Looks like a crappy season.
Christ i’m bored already.

I’m with Laura…I was hoping Blayne was getting auf’d…how annoying that he thinks he’s going to be this season’s Christian. Note to Blayne: you are not “fierce” enough. I thought the episode boring and the participants seem boring on the whole. But that being said I *am* glad PR is back on. And I wondered why I only saw one commercial the week before it began…I too had to stay up to catch the rerun. *sigh*

July 17th, 2008 - 10:44 pm

Hehe MJBoy is adorable, my mom also thinks so. But I don’t understand why everyone thought they were being different by using tableclothes!

While Jerry’s American Psycho outfit was bad news, I would have auf’ed Mr. Fake n’Bake Blayne. euch. He is nasty. And what was that girlicious? I feel like he walked in and was trying to start the next PR catchphrase and ended up with one ugly ugly thing (I can’t call it an outfit). Suede is a bit too much of a knock off version of PR Canada’s Biddell. I’m not sure I can handle a grown man referring to himself as “Suede” for a full season.

I’m pretty happy with Kelli’s win, but I think she’s got some stiff competition to deal with.

Did anyone else think the salad around the collar of the yellow dress looked totally ridiculous? And I think Michael Kors said the dress was “so wearable”. Who wears a salad on their collar?

Marc Jacobs boy (Wesley) & Daniel are dating!
I’m almost sure . . .
they make a very cute and talented couple, yay!

July 20th, 2008 - 11:11 pm

I would LOVE it if Wesley and Daniel were dating- SO cute!
I thought Daniel totally rocked the challenge. Not only did the cups dress have a wow factor, but the way he put it together was gorgeous! The symmetrical “seams” by the hips!?
The dying on Kelli’s dress came out nicely but I think the coffee filters were uninspired and vacuum bags are just another kind of fabric substitute and overall didn’t hold a candle to Daniel’s cups dress (the spiral notebook thing was cool though).
Every time tannalicious was on screen I cringed. He has to go soon. Unwatchable. Don’t they have to do screen tests or something? :)
I can’t wait to see what Leanne can do- I love her etsy shop.

I was excited the first week and figured they just got off to a rocky start. But I found this week truly uninspiring. It makes me nervous for the whole season in general. Not to be ridiculous here, but next week better be fierce.

July 24th, 2008 - 6:01 pm

so far this season is my least favorite–soo sad.
