Under the Radar

radi-designers-transparent.jpg
There are so many makers who we’d like to get into the pages of American Craft but have been unable to do so just yet. But there is plenty of time! However, I wanted to share some of the work of makers who we’re hoping to have the opportunity to work with soon.

Radi Designers are a design collective in France whose work we’ve admired for quite some time, in particular their glass cake forms. Delicious. [Top image above: Radi Designers, Transparent Cakes, Objects for the Table, 2003]

giselle-hicks.jpg
Giselle Hicks is a ceramist who is just about to start her graduate studies at Alfred University. We were introduced to Hicks by Leslie Ferrin and have been fans of her work since. We really like what she’s been doing thus far and predict very good things to come! [Image above: Giselle Hicks, Untitled Stack, 2005, 9" x 9" x 8"]

mariana-dempster-horny.jpg
Mariana Dempster is a Toronto based artist who was born in Mexico. Lately she has been making shoes that my colleague, Christine Kaminsky, says only Tina Turner could dance in. We still love them! [Image above: Mariana Dempster, Horny, mixed media; found shoe, bees' wax/pine resin, glass seed beads, feathers...]

tanya-felt-chairs.jpg
Tanya Aguiniga is a furniture and textile artist born in Tijuana and now residing in Los Angeles. An interesting mix of mediums that looks very promising. We’re looking forward to more from Tanya. [Image above: Tanya Aguiniga, Felt Chairs]

oliver-helden.jpg
Oliver Helden is the co-owner and head designer of a Loden Dager, a (relatively) new clothing company that makes me want to shopSright now! [Image above: Loden Dager]

heather-mae-the-industrial.jpg
Heather Mae Erickson is a ceramist who has been making a lot of really beautiful work for quite a while. She is currently the artist-in-residence at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia where there seems to be a lot of great things going on by the way. We are big fans of both Philadelphia and Erickson! Those shoes are fierce! And I love Giselle’s work. This is the best blog yet! (until the next one, that is…)

I think your link to the Clay Studio is incorrect. The link you’ve included goes to a San Francisco, not Philadelphia, organization. Here is the correct link:

Most of these artists demonstrate why I stopped reading American Craft so long ago. The magazine went from covering real craft/art to a fringe ‘art’ magazine, so sad. Looks like stuff from someones MFA thesis but not in a good way.
