punks and roses

when i was in college i took a really fascinating class (really) on romanesque illuminated manuscripts. aside from absolutely loving learning about all of the work and detail that went into each manuscript, i really enjoyed learning about the culture of that time period- namely about reliquaries, which are containers reserved for relics. photographer fran pelsman liscio in new jersey has put a modern spin on the idea of a reliquary with these gorgeous photographs of reliquaries containing objects like flowers, animals and insects. they have such a haunting quality to them and i love the rich colors- i know they may give some of you the creeps but i thought they were way too cool to pass up. click here for more information on fran’s work.

Oooh thank you so much for featuring this wonderful photographer! I love the dark and richly coloured images!

The timing is so funny, too. I’m a photographer as well, and just yesterday I packed up a box of precious items, went out onto my front porch, and began a series of images inspired by arranging the weird and wonderful items from the box onto ephemera papers. I had no idea there was an official name for it!

Thank you so much for all your wonderful inspiration! I’m a new daily reader, and first time commenter.

I loved it! The work goes way beyond design, it is art. The “Botanica” and “Botanica Noir” series carry a resemblance to still life flower images from the 18th and 19th centuries with the characteristic lively color against a dark background but with a definite new twist .

I really like that you published this Grace! The images are a bit haunting, yet in such a beautiful way that is both vintage yet modern. Enjoy your weekend in SF!

These are really inspiring. I may well spend the afternoon in the garden making collages myself!

You’ve just inspired me into a different way to photograph my jewellery. I love your site.

These are incredibly inspiring. They instantly remind me of classic textile designs, William Morris and then further back to classical Renaissance ornament and tapestries.
So beautiful, makes me want to get my paint out!
