sneak peek: christie chase

christiechase1.jpg
our second sneak peek of the day comes to us from christie chase and her husband tyler. their fantastic 1919 bungalow in the historic heights neighborhood nestled next to downtown houston received an honorable mention in jonathan adler happy chic home contest. lucky for us, christie was kind enough to open up the rest of her home for us today. i’m loving the way she incorporates great pops of color, and the the way textures and patterns weave their way through her home, clearly influenced by her background in fashion and fine arts. thanks so much to christie for opening up her home to us today! you can click here to view more, full-sized images of her place, and here to visit her new etsy shop. -anne

[in christie's words: We have lived here for 5 years and have spent lots of time, elbow grease, (and $) renovating, updating and refurbishing our bungalow. We both love to do home projects and have learned so many different trades while working on this house. It is a never ending project, but we love living here. . . above: Most of the art on this wall are all things that friends and family have made. Included is a needlepoint of Aftrican Violets that my Mom made in the 70's. I reframed everything to update the look. ]

christiechase2.jpg

This room is both my guest bedroom and my closet and vanity. Our bungalow is short on closet space, so I have tucked multiple wardrobes into the corners of this room.

christiechase3.jpg

Our bed is the ever famous MALM, but we changed it up by building a sofa table of sorts behind the headboard and repurposing the drawers from the MALM bedside tables .

christiechase4.jpg
My husband, my Dad and I made this floating dresser. Because of the space under it, it helps make our room feel bigger.

christiechase5.jpg
This clock I found at the Goodwill and I painted the frame and added a photo that I took. I love the printed glass, it gives it a three dimensional look

christiechase6.jpg
Inspired by the faux bois wood paneling that I saw on d*s sneak peek “something’s hiding in here” a few months ago, I added it to the walls and ceiling of my dining nook. I love it!

christiechase7.jpg

christie8.jpg
This red buffet which displays my Munny collection is the only piece of new furniture we have ever purchased. Pretty much everything else (outside of a few Ikea pieces) I got at a thrift shop and repurposed. The artwork is by me.

christie11.jpg

christie12.jpg
There are two central hallways connecting the 6 rooms in our house. This one you can see from almost every room, so I tried to turn it into pop art.

This is the most visually rich home I think I’ve seen – so many interesting details to study and admire! I adore the paint choices.

As a recent Houston transplant (and one currently in the midst of decorating an apartment from scratch), I’m positively swelled with hometown pride and completely inspired. It’s so encouraging to see such a light, vibrant home in a city where strip malls and concrete freeways can sometimes eclipse its beauty. Wonderful work Christie and Tyler!

Does anyone know how to find out the different shades of paint in their apartment? They are perfect!

October 27th, 2008 - 2:03 pm

Sigh… I love all those soft tones, especially the grey…

I second the floating dresser question. And what about that ceramic pendant light? Is that a homemade piece?

Thanks to all of you for the warm complements on my home! The paint color in the top pic is “Dried Plein” by Dutch Boy. The grey paint in the bedroom with the cat in it is “Sea Haze” by Benjamin Moore.

*DROOL* i LOVE all the white and grey. It’s a light and crisp color scheme for hot summers but also works great for winter. my favs in this sneak peek were: the bare tree art in the corner of the 2nd photo (would love a closer look at that). the rug also from that photo, the porclain/ceramic looking peices, the deer painting, the beachphotoclock (OMG), and the bluish woodgrain treatment on the inside of the window. oh and of course i’m a sucker for a cute kittykat.

We live in a 1910 bungalow and I’m dying to paint the original dark woodwork white, so I’m wondering, did you paint yours over? People freak out when I say I’m thinking about painting it, but the light, bright quality of your home is inspiring!

The yellow and grey pillows in the first pic are Dwell for Target (they were in stores last year) I bought one pillow (which came patterned on both sides),cut it apart and backed each with white so that I could have two pillows from one! To answer Juliana’s question about the bungalow original wood,… ours was already painted a million coats over when we bought the house, so we did not catch any grief about freshening it up with new paint. If you want to see what my house looked like before I redid it, check out my flickr photostream, which Anne provided a link to above.

I love the way people creatively hang or place frames, being a designer, this should come easy for me. I always have the ideas, but never the patience to do it, and I can’t hang straight to save my life :(

This is a great and purposeful space, beautifully done.

your house is abosultely amazing and i am envious of your incredible design skills! my favorite part is the clock with the photo that YOU TOOK. i can’t wait to check out your etsy sight! and on top of all that, those pictures of your house are amazing – did you take them or did you use a professional (someone I could hire) :)

This house is beautiful! Love the feel of the bedroom – where are the pillows and the wall art (the ones with gray dripping paint) from? Love it!

October 28th, 2008 - 11:15 am

This space is so amazingly inspiring to me. I was feeling very dreary, before viewing these photos, and suddenly I feel more hopeful.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Kate – I did the grey drip art paintings in my bedroom and would be happy to paint some for you. Convo me at my etsy shop if you are interested. Thanks!

Julie- I took the photos of my house using my Canon EOS 40D and various angle lenses. If you live in Houston, you can hire me : )

Kari- I assume you are talking about the bed with the cat on it…the spread is Jonathan Adler Happy Home orgami print, the grey cat bed and throw pillow were formerly a duvet from a Marimekko print that Crate&Barrel sold a few years ago. The pillows closest to the headboard are pillowcases from Jonathan Adler Kensington print, and the front shams I made from a pink/blue/purple Ikat like print fabric. I have more of this fabric, if you are interested in pillows made from it convo me on etsy. Thanks!

Christie Chase said:
October 28th, 2008 - 11:24 am

OOPS!
Kari – the bedspread is actually West Elm organic collection from last year…not the JA that I said……I interchange them alot because I am constantly washing cat hair (I’m allergic) off of the bedding. I should have looked at the photo to see what was one there before responding!

I would love to know where that drawer, with the small drawers on the top and the big ones on the bottom is from (next to the malm bed). It is sooo beautiful and also very practical..!!

Christie Chase said:

Vivian,
the dresser next to my bed was actually a thrift store find that I painted. It is a Bassett piece of furniture and they still sell a similar style, but I will tell you, that the little drawers are actually a trick of the eye as they are really two large drawers!
