It was with an equal amount of enthusiasm and trepidation that I accepted Grace’s offer to be a guest blogger here at Designsponge. At first I was excited to be able to share all my knowledge with an even larger group of people than I usually reach on my blog Grassrootsmodern, then I realized that I had absolutely no idea what to blog about.Â

Coming from a small farm town in northern Utah, the words design and modern were hardly even in my vocabulary growing up. For me, discovering modern architecture and interior design was a surreal experience. One day I stumbled across MoCo Loco, and I couldn’t believe that there were other people out there that liked the exact same things as I did. This excitement was quickly followed by disappointment when I found out that I couldn’t afford the look I loved so much. What has followed is a life long journey of trying to get back to the roots of modernism, where modern design is a movement that can create better lives for everyone, and not a look that is exclusive to the upper class. While I claim no expertise in the area of design (I defer to experts like Grace in those areas) I do have real world knowledge of trying to remodel a 700 square foot bungalow and add a 600 square foot modern addition on a shoestring budget. In fact that’s exactly what I have been blogging about for almost 4 years now. But to save you the time of having to read the whole story of our house, I’m going to give you the highlights this week and share everything I learned.
