Remodeling Our Home on a Budget

I mentioned in my last post that I would share my experience on how we remodeled our home and added a modern addition on a budget. It turns out that one of the hardest parts of the whole project was finding the right home to start with. My wife and I live in Salt Lake City, and previous to purchasing our home we lived in an apartment a couple blocks from downtown. We loved the location and wanted to build a new home in the same area. Unfortunately after months and months of hunting we decided we would never find a lot in a place we liked at a price we could afford. We decided to do the next best thing. Find the cheapest house we could in an area we liked. We lucked out and were able to find a 700 square foot bungalow on .11 acres for sale by owner. The neighborhood was a little farther from downtown than we liked, but the price was right at $106,000. After getting all the details worked out, we were officially homeowners. We were delighted to have a place of our own, and overwhelmed at the prospect of turning a super traditional 700 square foot home with two bedrooms a living room and a kitchen, bathroom and laundry room (yes, they were all very small cramped rooms) into a open floor plan modern home. To break the ice we went to the home depot and got a gallon of the brightest apple green paint we could find for our bedroom wall. That seemed to get the creative juices flowing and made what was to come next a little easier.

judging from the facade you give us in your first post, i suppose you’ll do a wonderful job with that traditional cream house… love the apple green!!!

He’s a Goldendoodle. Half golden retriever and half standard poodle. He doesn’t shed at all, and is super goofy. His name is Ainsley and we love him!

ha ha — i thought you were talking about the boy, who is also very cute! I’m looking forward to seeing the redesign — the apple green is very promising.
