sneak peek: eliza jane curtis {morris and essex}

our last sneak peek of the day takes us down to buenos aires, argentina to the home of eliza jane curtis, the mastermind behind the beautiful hand-printed greeting cards morris & essex. she describes her cards and apartment as reflections of her love of color, plants, animals and a bright jumble of vintage influences. i’m totally loving her space and it’s openness, which is definitely different from the architecture in maine, where she is originally from. check out more, full-sized images right here (photos by caitlin m. kelly). and don’t forget to check out her super cute site right here. [thanks so much, eliza!] -anne

[above: Living room seen from the stairs. This space is so huge. sometimes we have fun dragging the furniture around to switch things up or make room for ping-pong games or movie projections.]

The bedroom is sunny and white. The windows and door open out onto our terrace.

Most of the furniture came from the huge Mercado de las Pulgas flea market a few blocks away. The beard picture is by ashley g. I love her bearded men. This guy looks a lot like Mike. I made the paper cut-out. The bear-headed lady is from Oh My Cavalier.

This is our dining room. It was once an open courtyard but now it has a glass roof. There are still old tree stumps embedded in the poured concrete floor. I love how many older buildings in Buenos Aires blur the lines between indoor space and outdoor space.

It’s cool having a jungle in the dining-room.

The kitchen is little but it works fine. I recently enjoyed an inspiring interview with Mark Bittman about cooking in a tiny kitchen. I made the curtains using a carrot for a stamp. The bike print is from Chris Piascik.

Homemade spice labels.

i love these crazy bathroom walls. the couple that owns the apartment are friends of friends, they painted all these squares.

Bedroom window, looking in from the terrace. . . I found the red apple tray on the street last year. What luck!

Sometimes I work on projects here. I do have a separate studio space, about ten minutes from home. The plastic swimmer is just one of the interesting characters in my little plastic figurine collection. Notebook is from Sukie. I made the yellow pattern painting and the folded-paper egg. It’s great seeing birds looking in at me through this window when I open my eyes in the morning.

I’m currently house hunting, and seeing this post just gets me majorly excited and motivated to own my own place so that I can turn it into a space that is truly my own!

Buenos Aires? I’m so jealous! And impressed. It’s not easy, I think, to move from someplace like Maine to someplace like Latin America.

This home is wonderfully eclectic. The kind of place I’d love to have for myself in Madrid someday. ;)

Perfect bohemian space. Somebody better be creating interesting art in there. Or falling in love over and over again. Or being daring.

charming, delightful, unpretentious, like a scene in a Neruda novel; your space seems to inspire you as much as you inspire your space. . .Thanks for the peak

This is probably my FAVORITE sneak peek ever! Each room so is beautiful!!! Wondering where that blue/green chandelier is from in the living room. I’m dying for something like that and haven’t had any luck finding anything.

January 5th, 2009 - 4:52 pm

I’m with Paloma- this might be my favorite sneak peek, too. I am in LOVE with this space! Could not have come at a better time as I am moving into a new home and trying to retain the bohemenian look of my older place. It’s a big challenge to keep a bohemian space organized while retaining the organic vibe. Way to go and thanks for the inspiration!

Absolutely agree with everyone here–this is the best sneak peek ever! No MCM in sight!! I’d love to see more international spaces, Grace. Also gotta comment on the interesting up/down angles of the photographs. All in all… simply stunning.

This is the best sneak in ages, and I agree whole heartedly with Christina, the absence of ‘mcm’ is refreshing, not everyone wants to own a freaking Hans Wergner. Actually maybe the Wergners can stay and we just ditch the ‘keep calm and carry on’ posters (yes ill give mine up if you do).

Lovely home. For those who wish they lived in a “warmer climate” please note:

Buenos Aires is located in the Southern Hemisphere, which means its seasons are the opposite of those of North America.

Since Buenos Aires is located quite south of the equator, the city does experience four distinct seasons.

The city is not “tropical,” nor does it have a tropical vibe. And while this apartment is darling, it’s not representative of the way most Porteños decorate anymore than a bohemian Silverlake apartment is representative of the way most Angelenos live.

It is now the height of summer in Buenos Aires, which explains the lush courtyard.

In winter (the month of July in particular) the city is cold. Temps can range from the 30s to the 40s.

In fact, it snowed in Buenos Aires last July. (A rare ocurence.)

I love this! I wish Copenhagen had the same climate as Buenos Aires so I could have a place like this. Absolutely gorgeous!

January 6th, 2009 - 2:48 pm

thanks for all the great positive comments! Paloma, the chandelier was here when we moved in, I guess it probably came from the nearby flea market. As for the solarium/dining-room, we do use it year-round, as it has a glass roof, though it does get a bit chilly in the winter. It’s definitely warmer here than in the northeast usa! For those familiar with Buenos Aires, we’re in the Palermo Hollywood neighborhood. Glad everybody’s enjoying the photos!!

I agree with everything that’s been said…it’s a wonderful home! I immediately thought of the word insouciant when viewing it - certainly a favorite of mine! This is my first post at Design Sponge and I like the idea that you restrict comments that do not “contribute constructively” to the dialogue. There are sites I avoid because of the very negative, elitist, and I imagine very hurtful (if it’s your house people are dissing) tone to some of the remarks.

she looks like she could be a display coordinator at anthro! the details in this place are both meticulous and unpretentious. the combination of found objects and color are both homey and beautifully designed. i love it.

My style. Set colorful pieces, unique thrift furniture and a dining area to die for. I’m decorating a 1955 three bedroom beach cottage rental and it gives me inspiration to show my place off probably by the end of the year.
