before & after: jason martin design + CONTEST

this before & after is a special series of before & afters courtesy of designer jason martin. jason was the owner of silho furniture in los angeles and is now focusing on interior design and custom furniture for private clients. he sent me a link to the before & after page of his site (i wish more designers had those!) and i was blown away by the subtle sophistication in each makeover. i could hardly narrow it down to my favorite three so i decided to post my favorites right here and after the jump. so CLICK HERE to view all of the makeovers or just click “read more” below. thanks to jason for sending over his lovely work- you can see more of his work right here.

also: d*s will be having a before & after contest in april to celebrate great makeover projects in categories like: furniture, kitchens, bathrooms, over-all house, outdoor space, etc. i’ll be announcing details in the coming weeks, but i wanted to give everyone a heads up- if you’re working on a project you think you might like to submit, be sure to take a “before” shot now :)

These are beautiful makeovers, but I must admit that it doesn’t seem as if the “before” pictures are really accurate depictions of the rooms…poor camera quality/angles, poor lighting, unkept rooms, etc.

The table and ottoman(?) in the entry way are pure liquid awesome.

I love the big print framed in the living room. Is it a piece of art work or fabric?

The stool in the entry way is gorgeous. I’ve been looking for one for our living room – anyone know where to find??

Love the brown and grey patterned duvet cover in the grey bedroom. Any chance we could find out where he got it?

I’m with Melanie… any info on that amazing large framed print/fabric?

I agree! Is that framed fabric or a painting? I must know.

I like that the changes are no drastic like removing an entire wall. I really like the side tables of the first bedroom but I’m not a fan of the entry table, just personal preference.

Hmm, each B&A is sort of independent, it seems to me. I like some, I don’t like other. In particular, I like the new dining table and the remake of the ladder space.

ooooooh…. i am so excited. i want to submit my in-progress bathroom or kitchen. i have been diligently taking progress pictures for my blog for once. i never used to take a before. maybe my new blog is a good influence on me!

Wow, I wouldn’t have thought the dining room chairs would have made it to the “after” but look how cute they are with the right surroundings. Love this one!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the positive comments. For those who were asking about the large wall hanging- it is a framed panel covered on site with a wallpaper from Tres Tintas. Last time I ck’ed it was available at Walnut Wallpaper. My sales rep was Leslie (she is the best).

I always wonder how the homeowner reacted, when I see dramatic makeovers like these. While understated and often crude, the “before” home reflects the homeowners personal tastes. Some of these makeovers are 180 degree turnabouts. Don’t get me wrong, for the most part they look great! I am just curious if the homeowners like them.

kandas

in a case like this, it’s a good question. but i would imagine they hired a designer because they were unhappy with their “before” situation.

for all other posts, we have images submitted by the homeowners themselves so they’re usually game for the before part of the process ;)

Oh my! Its an excellent idea – thanks for the link!!! Even better – I have decided to take photos of each room in my house I want to improve, then put them up on a blank wall to re-do… amazing what a camera picks up that our sight doesn’t.

I kinda disagree with the dramatic change comment. There seems to me a element or two of the same from the before to the after. Let it be color palette, accessories, or parts and pieces of previous furniture. For example- white couch with b/w pillows, style of couch changed and pattern of pillows- to me that is subtle. Same with one of the bedrooms. Kept the side tables and lamps, changed headboard and bedding. I think the artwork and accessories made the most impact in this home. I think it is fabulous and I love when designers use clients’ previous furnishings. That takes talent and vision to make a uniform and cohesive tone/decor through out one’s home. As for my home- it does not totally reflect my personal taste… right now. We renovated and moved into our first home AND had a baby! Money and time have been very much a factor. I wish I could afford Jason to come and tweek my home and make changes that I just can’t see.
Bravo- jm

I totally disagree with the dramatic change comment. Before reading the comments, I was scrolling down specifically to post that I am impressed with how the designer clearly worked with each owner’s style and took cues from their existing design that showed up in the “afters”. Also, I assume he was working with the owners to collect input on what they wanted, so I would assume the “after” reflects their input as well!

I absolutely love what they have done in every room! What a huge difference and yet they were able to re-use many peices. I love seeing what I call fabulous “real living” design – it not only looks pulled together, but it looks comfy and liveable, too. Love all the vintage items!

I love these “makeovers”. What I especially like is that they feel masculine enough for a man to live in, but there are enough feminine touches that they would appeal to women, too. I think the point of view is really fresh! Not too cutesy, and not too stuffy. Really great!

I’d like to know where the throw pillows are from in the after photo of the guestroom? I’d love to know.
