minakani is the parisian designing duo of cécile figuette & frédéric bonnin. they recently released a beautiful series of wallpaper that have been acting as my desktop wallpaper for days. i love the hand-drawn feel of them, and the whimsical way those giant birds fill the wall (above). it’s delightful to see the way wallpapers are progressing these days- i love highly patterned and computer-designed prints, but i’m really loving the way hand-drawn illustrations seeming to be making their way onto walls. click here for more information on minakani [thanks, cécile and frédéric!]

Use “computer designed” cautiously. Computers don’t design. People do. That’s like giving credit to the hammer when a mansion is built.

sadly, a lot of people use clipart, images from the web, and cds of images that you can basically cut and paste into a pattern. that’s what i mean by computer art. it’s one thing when an artist uses a tablet to scan in an illustration- it’s another when i get an email with ‘original’ pattern designs that i recognize from clip art books i’ve seen in stores ;)

Look at those birds!! Incredible. I’d love it in a room with great moldings, wide pine floors. Yum.

these are absolutely beautiful. although textured plaster walls are nice, seeing these lovely papers so makes me wish i had a wall with a smooth surface somewhere in the house!

Katherine, there is a product called “wallpaper liner” that exists just for this reason! It’s slightly thicker and stiffer than wallpaper, and it goes up horizontally. It will make the surface nice and smooth and ready for wallpaper! :)

love the electrical jack wallpaper in the last photo. I would love to have that in an office space.

A great thing! Presonally I loved the one in the kitchen. I’ll try to make the same in my house.

I’m fond of handmade things. They are unique and look very original. These wallpaper are the best example of such things.

The birds look a bit strange. But it’s a matter of taste. Lovely things!
