sneak peek: barb blair of knack studios

barbpeek1
i couldn’t resist sharing an extra sneak peek today. after all of the server/hosting company drama, a great home tour always calms me down. today’s beautiful home belongs to one of my favorite designing women, barb blair of knack studios. barb rescues and restores vintage and found furniture at knack with such great results, that she’s an almost weekly favorite on our before & after days. but today we’re getting a special look inside her greenville, south carolina home and it’s full of the sort of gorgeous furniture and details that i’ve come to expect from barb. you can see full versions of barb’s photos right here, or just click “read more” below to view the full sneak peek of barb’s home. thanks so much to barb for sharing her home with us!

[stay tuned for a new diy project from lauren and derek next!]

[image above: Our bedroom - loving, loving, loving my malm bed from ikea ..... curtains are also from ikea and the big "b" over the bed is a found piece that was taken off a local subway shop. The faux boise lamps I had custom made from ceramic vases found at a local pottery discount store. The print hanging on the wall is by another one of my favorite artists jessica gonacha]

barbpeek2
[image above: the dining room - the table in here is over 100 years old and has five leaves! It gets so big we almost can't fit it in the dining room! This piece was my first "big girl " purchase and what do you know my painting wood purist friends I didn't paint it!! Let me hear a collective hoot from all of you! The light blue hutch is a combination of a dresser that I found and a cabinet I had custom built out of old windows.... providing both function and fabulousness! The lovely print is by traci french of blissful images and again another piece of greatness from paper cloud. That lamp shade really provides a pop of color and was just what the room needed. The bowl on the table is one that I had made from an old brake drum.....love the urban industrial touch it adds.]

barbpeek3
[image above: I just recently wallpapered my hallway with this lovely print by Waverly. I love the modern graphic element and the bright clean design]

barbpeek5
[image above: I bought this piece at a garage sale for 20 bucks and have never seen another chair like it! I painted it and had it totally rebuilt and upholstered .... I would have to say it is one of the first things people notice when they come to my house! I think it was the best 20 bucks I ever spent!]

CLICK HERE to see the rest of barb’s home after the jump…

barbpeek4
[image above: The den is my favorite room in the house ..... I cherish the huge smiling faces of my of my kids and the warmth they bring to the room. The lamps are some of my favorites I found the lamps at goodwill and spray painted them brown then added the fabulous shades by paper cloud. The fantastic papercut is by San Francisco artist Tina Tarnoff. The pillows on the couch are also by paper-cloud ... can you tell I'm a big fan :)]

barbpeek6
[image above: the living room in the front of the house gets the most light because of the huge bay window]

barbpeek7
[image above, left to right: The orange cabinet is back for revenge! I figured that a piece that got that much attention was too valuable to part with, and when I brought it home and put it in the bedroom I was more in love than ever before! The chair I picked up from Goodwill "as is" for a whopping 5 bucks! I love the yellow green alongside the orange- and the fabulous painting on top of the cabinet is an original by my friend and fellow artist kyle buttram. Right: this little chair was a yard sale find that I had reupholstered and then my friend michelle ( who has her own fabulous jewelry line- blue moss) hand stitched all the flowers on for me. It is simply fantastic! The desk in the background is one of my pieces and also my desk/ work station at home.]

barbpeek8
[image above: The kitchen- there is still work to do in here …. new countertops are coming eventually, but I painted the cabinets and they are very special to me since this was the job that catapulted me into my love of painting today. They took me three weeks to finish, but I was hooked afterward and have loved them ever since! Much cheaper than tearing them all out and starting over and I think a much more custom, unique look as well.

Amazing! And I love those Curtains in the bedroom! I looked but couldn’t find them on Ikea’s site! Do you know what they are called?

Hey, the light above the dining room table is by Cincinnati’s own Paper Cloud! Go, Queen City design!

The color palette for the entire house is great.

Oh dear! That orange cabinet IS too incredible to ditch. The wallpaper, to echo Tara, is too gorgeous. Is that the Spring pattern by Waverly? What color scheme, do you know?

Wonderful home tour — thanks for sharing, Barb and Grace!

I have to say, I’m kind of glad you kept the orange cabinet. That’s my favorite thing you’ve done! In fact, it inspired me to hunt down a china cabinet for myself, paint it turquoise, and put red handles on it. It looks amazing, so thanks for the inspiration!

And I LOVE your wallpaper. That is fantastic.

oh my … where to even begin thanking all of you sweet readers for your overwhelming remarks about my home! Thank you so much …. you all are wonderful!

First off, I have to say ….much to my chagrin in trying to list all the different artists and special people who have added so much to my home with their lovely work I left out a very special person! My favorite thing about the den is my children’s beautiful photographs done by my friend and very talented photographer Kacy Mehlem. To see more of her amazing work visit her site http://www.kacymehlem.com. Kacy, I am so sorry ……

I bought the curtains a couple years ago from ikea and the name of them is ” freja tapet” linen rayon panels. I’m not sure that they have them anymore but maybe if you have the name you can locate some. :)

The paint in the bedroom is called “contemplation ” and it is by Behr paints.
The wallpaper is the spring line of waverly from the urban attitude collection….. I ‘m not sure the color name…. all of my rolls are open and have no tag…..

The fabulous “B” is a found item that we bought here from http://www.artandlightgallery.com and is off a local SUBWAY joint!

Thanks again so much friends! xo

Wonderful home! Love the wallpaper.

Barb- I love both of your chairs! I was wondering about the one you painted- did you paint it before or after the upholstery- I have a similar one that I want to paint & upholster, but wasn’t sure if the upholsterer would tackle the paint job in addition to the upholstery. Also, would you be willing to share the cost of upholstery on that chair?

February 25th, 2009 - 10:24 pm

Love it. Thanks for the share.

elisbeth,

the chairs and shade is a happy accident! Thanks for pointing that out!:)

Angela,

Thank you so much…. I did paint the chair before the upholstery job….. he did a super great job keeping the finish looking nice! I had to have a little bit of structural work done on the bottom of the chair so with fabric and all it was around 250 dollars. I hope your chair project goes well!

Jasmine,

the paint color in my den is forde abbey by ralph lauren….. and it is the perfect shade of grey! :)

Thanks again everyone for your amazing support! I appreciate your generosity! xoxo

The echo of the onion shape on the dining room pendant light and the onion-shaped wood detail on the dining room chair back is really wonderful. That paper cloud lamp may be (finally) what I have been looking for for my own dining room.

February 27th, 2009 - 12:58 pm

I love, love, love that orange cabinet. I want one!!!!

February 27th, 2009 - 3:24 pm

This entire home is amazing, oh my! It’s hard to say just one thing that I love, so I’ll pick two. I LOVE the hutch in the dining room, I’ve always wanted to do something like that for my bedroom dresser. I’m also a HUGE fan of the hand-stitched flowers on the chair. What a great way to make your home look more crafty and cozy, and I love that it’s sentimental because a friend did it. Wonderful!
