book city jackets + nel dog shelf

when i was little i always got excited for the start of a new school year. not because of classes (although i was definitely the geeky kid who loved to grab a seat at the front of class to be close to the teacher) but because i got to make new book covers for my text books. i would go back and forth between drawing zig zag patterns and silly doodles, odes to the new kids on the block and various actors like keanu reeves and leonardo dicaprio. but if i still had text books to cover, i think i’d definitely like something simple and cool like these recycled book jackets from book city jackets.

each jacket is printed in downtown new york and made to fit almost any size book. i met the founder of the company, jeremy schwartz, at the design by the book finale party and talked about the project. jeremy’s got big ideas for the company, and i’m hoping to see a guest series of designers at book city jackets in the future. click here to check out the series and shop online.

while checking out the book city jackets blog i saw this super cute dog shelf by NEL, a mexican design collective. i am dying to have one of these next to my bed for my favorite books. what a cheerful way to start and end the day with a little reading.

i never wanted to throw away my book coves at the end of the year. it was a testament of my love for doodling and took a whole year to develop!.. haha and there was always funny conversations written on them from me and my classmates…

love these covers (and the shelf)! i used to make book covers out of my architect dad’s old blueprints–they looked awesome and as a bonus, there were tons of windows to doodle little people and dioramas in when i was in math class.

love the look on these book covers – modern and clean/spare but still homey and nostalgic.
reminds me of some of the cool stuff i’ve seen in the hands of the designerati on tokyo subways… well done, Book City Jackets!

I used to love sitting down with old grocery bags and making covers (no contact paper for me!).

Maybe I should try it again, just for fun.

Oh my goodness. I have so many ugly books…this would be totally perfect!

oh wow, nostalgia alert!
My best friend and I coordinated our cover paper purchases and split them amongst the both of us so we had twice the amount of different designs. I always ended up doodling on my neighbours’ brown paper covers though.
My favourite was my agenda, which came with a clear plastic cover. I made an entire collage behind it displaying everything I loved (from Mister Darcy to Cartman :D)

Very cool. Would be funny to see the newly dressed books sitting on that dog, with the original covers in his mouth.
PS The link for book city jackets seems weird — probably better at bookcityjackets.com
