before & after: skinny laminx’s chairs

herds-glider-before
this before and after makes me want to scour every thrift and antique store in my borough to find chairs as cute as these. heather moore of skinny laminx really underwent a major reupholstery project using her own sevilla rock print fabric, which is available as yardage in her etsy shop.

quick note: next week i’ll be in montana for our honeymoon, but i’ll be posting like always. so i’m saving up the rest of the before & afters for next week, since i won’t be around this week to collect new ones. so stay tuned for normal before & afters and weeder’s digest (which is on hold this week). sorry for the delay, but i didn’t want to leave the site without content next week so we’ve been saving up a bit ;)

Wow, I’ve loved Heather’s work ever since she participated in the tea towel exhibit I curated. It’s great to see her branch out into textiles, and I absolutely adore these reupholstery projects! The first chair looked a bit like a torture device in the “before” photo but then became cute!

That first chair is probably my favorite before / after ever. very classic and beautiful!

The first chair inspires me–we have an old glider rocker that could use some love…and some style.

love love love them all–that first one is an incredible chair made even neater!

They’re all great! Wonderful textile prints too, kudos!

Hands down the best before-and-afters I’ve ever seen! Those patterns are gorgeous and I love the white paint job on the first chair. Amazing.

To my great surprise, I really dig these! The animal prints are different, but subtle enough not to be like, “OMG AMINALS?! FOR SERIOUS!?”

(Well, okay, the 2nd one’s not all that subtle. But it’s just awesome!)

The fabrics are really great and different. Love that about them. How creative to give these classic chairs new life!

I love that she didn’t repaint the white, chipped woodwork in the first chair.

Very cool.

I dig the chairs, but I’m mostly interested in the Montana honeymoon. Glacier? Yellowstone? It’s where I’ve lived most of my life, and it’s not all that often it’s mentioned on design blogs (well, any blogs…) Enjoy it!

Loooove this…I have her yardage on my little birthday wishlist, and have been scouring flea markets for a few weekends now to find an ottoman with *just* the right lines to re-cover with the fabric…not having much luck so far in San Diego, but I think the effort will eventually pay off!

Wow – amazing fabric!! I have two wingback chairs that I am planning to re-upholster but have been struggling to find the perfect fabric. I absolutely love the Colts fabric in goldenrod and teal that she has in her Etsy shop. Just perfect! I might finally be able to crack on with the project now!!

These are great!

I am all about the DIY attitude – I love thrift stores, vintage furniture, picking out fabric and paint…the gamut.

My problem is that I am a grad student that doesn’t have the material resources to do them! (as in, a staple gun, sander, space to to these projects…my dad has all these things at home and I do know how to use them, but they are either expensive, take up a whole lot of room, and no one wants to lug an air compressor up three floors)

I live in a 400 square foot apartment, and I’d really like to do some of these projects — any advice?

Grace-
The weather in Missoula and its surrounds is supposed to be beautiful this weekend. If you have a chance, make time for Missoula–it’s a little hotbed of funky shops, three great farmer’s markets on Saturday, a bustling downtown, good food, great bars –all within walking distance in town and about 35 minutes from Paw’s Up (it also happens to be where I live…for a reason!)

The armchair is so nicely done! I’d love to be able to do upholstery but I guess it’s not that easy…

May 22nd, 2009 - 3:42 pm

Hi! How much would it cost to have someone reupholster a wing back chair like that? I’ve never done something that big myself and think it may be safer to pay someone.

These are SO super. Where did you find the cool fabrics? That’s my biggest challenge here in Denver….so I grab lots when I’m in NYC or LA. Have a great honeymoon. Bring warm clothes.

Who would of thought that the chairs in the before photos could be saved & end up looking so terrific? The fabrics are great, I’ll have to check out the shop!

I am loving the fabrics, especially the last one – mongoose. I have to get my hands on some of this. I’ll worry about what to make with it later, but its too good to pass up!

I can’t believe what a great job she did of the reupholstering as well – I’m extremely impressed! Congrats on a great job.
