icff 2009: risd + pratt

featherbowl
the student design booths at any design show are almost always my favorite. and this year the students from risd and pratt really outdid themselves. [image above: 'perch' by andrew mau of risd]

booties
loofah ankle boot by ian horowitz of risd. i wanted to try these on so badly…

leatherstool
’split seat’ by isao takezawa of risd, made from vegetable tanned leather.

eggcratelights
pratt’s ‘design for a dollar’ booth was incredibly inspiring. the students came up with the theme and tried to create products with materials that cost around $1. i loved the ‘metamorphosis’ egg crate lamp above, by sukmo koo and young taek oh.

oranges
orange votive candles by david steinvurzel.

prattlights
left: ‘crystal chandelier’ made by soaking pipe cleaners in a saturated borax solution. by jennie maneri. right: ’sleeve’ sweater lamp by sara ebert.

scissors
’scissors’ by brian persico, laser cut from discarded saw blades.

hooksumbra
knobs
hooks created by the student design winners from umbra’s design contest. the door knob coat rack is by joseph eberle, and the rorschach wall organizer is by dana otto of pratt.

these are fantastic! amazing what creative minds can discover when given limitations – the pipe cleaner borax project blows my mind – who knew?!

Great student stuff! However, the doorknob coat rack is nothing new. I built one for my brother 15 years ago.

Well done, Bruce. You built it before a kid- you win.

I can’t get over the creativity in all of these pieces. I wish I could have seen that feather bowl in person, I get the feeling that the photo doesn’t quite do it justice (no offense to the photographer!!). And I definitely want a pair of those loofah boots.
