Nancy Froehlich, Gray Signal

I first met Nancy while sitting on the back porch of a good mutual friend sipping wine and reminiscing about the Pacific Northwest (where we both have roots). Nancy is truly a modern Renaissance woman. She is a photographer, designer, ceramicist, print-maker, curator, gallery director, professor, and well, I could go on and on. Her resume includes being the Director of Photography and a Graphic Designer for D.I.Y. Design it Yourself, photographing the likes of U2 and David Byrne and organizing single-evening exhibitions in her Gallery 2219. Nancy has traveled extensively but at least as of late keeps turning up in Baltimore.

Nancy is currently thinking more about the intersection of various art forms—printmaking and furniture design, graphic design and ceramics, photography and fashion design. Her current interest lies in how common materials can be used in unusual ways (the designs on the pottery were created from ready-made decals and a hole puncher). I could go on and on writing wonderful things about all of Nancy’s talents and work but I think that the images and her photos truly speak for themselves. (Thank you Nancy!)

The cut up bits of pattern on the bowls and vase are beautiful – make me wonder how they are achieved.

Please tell me she sells her work in Baltimore. I am in awe of the quotation plates; how clever! Red Tree perhaps? Blue House? Anywhere?

She was one of my professors this last senior year, and it was amazing. She pushes the concept of what design can be, become and how it interacts with the outside world. Amazing, work!

Thanks for all the kind words! I hope to be selling the plates soon, these were the prototypes.

The pieces with the dots were made with readymade decals and a hole punch.
