before & after: melissa’s chair + nikol’s dresser

melissa_before
i love a good upholstery job and this chair makeover from d*s melissa is a great example. melissa found this chair at a local estate sale for $10 and decided to make this her very first diy project. she stripped the old fabric, sanded the wood frame, and then painted it an ivory color with a wood stain to “antique” the frame. then she picked up a pink cotton fabric from fabric.com (durable and inexpensive to withstand her two little girls’ dirty hands, feet and shoes) and had the chair reupholstered by a local studio. a good upholstery job can really transform furniture and melissa’s chair is a wonderful example. thanks for sharing, melissa!

this pretty dresser makeover comes from nikol of decor scout. she purchased a 1963 home that happened to have this little wooden dresser sitting in the garage. she used contact paper to cover the top and side (i love the pattern!), painted the frame in “green grapes” paint from ace hardware and the legs and wood on the handles a glossy cream color. it’s such a colorful take on the original- thanks for sharing, nikol!

Very nice. The contact paper design is great; a beautiful piece now.

Melissa’s chair is beautiful…I’m inspired to remove the ugly slipcover on my tired old wing chair.

Nikol — Though I consider myself a wood purist :) your dresser makeover is outstanding. Can you share your source for the contact paper?

Fabulous!! These are both great re-do’s, I especially love the dresser with it’s subtle pattern

Wow I love the dresser. Usually not a fan of painting pieces like this but in this case it definately works!

The chair has to be one of my all-time favourite makeovers — who would have thought it could turn out so fresh + pretty?

Wow, both of these are lovely. I love the gentle colors. The pink chair totally took me by surprise, b/c it’s perfect and I usually don’t care for pink. And the green is more my style, but the handles and the pattern on the sides really makes it stand out! Great job to both.

Chair looks great but that dresser looks completely amzing, that’s contact paper? Wow, beautiful!

The new dresser is nice, but the new chair is amazing. Really beautiful!

Could you give the exact name and specs on the pink fabric Melissa used? I’ve been looking everywhere for a similar fabric for my couch and I think this would be perfect!

Both transformation are amazing! I love the chair and all the pink for her sweet girl. I’ve been eyeing a loveseat at a thrift store that needs a re-vamp and this post is inspiring me even more to go back and buy it!

Love, love the green on the dresser!

I adore the chair! I usually am not attracted to pink–but lately you’ve had a few posts that have made me think otherwise!

LOOOOOOVE the green dresser. I so want that.

I have that contact paper in my kitchen! I got it at Target – but I’ve noticed it curling up with the rise in humidity. Did she polyurethane over the top of it?

Just curious how much the chair upholsterly cost? I recently bought a chair with a beautiful frame and started pulling it apart only to realize I couldn’t reupholster it myself- way over my head! I’m just wondering how much a chair like that cost and how she knew how much fabric to order?

wow – they both look great! I would love to know the name of the shop that upholstered the chair (if in the NYC area) and about how much it cost.

I realize that i am among women here who probably appreciate froufie design style way more than I do.. BUT..

Come on! That dresser? look at the flame in the wood, its beautiful. And it matches from drawer to drawer. I just dont know why anyone would take something like that and rather than refinish the wood, instead turn it into some ikea looking crap with a cheap coat of paint and some walmart contact paper. Its baffling to me.

Thanks for the chair compliments! For anyone interested, the chair fabric is called Slubby Basket in teaberry.

nikol said:

The dresser is a hard wood veneer on the top, sides and front. I could see this because the veneer was peeled off on the corner front edge (which you can se in the photo.). The drawers were a thicker veneered front.

I have refinished wood pieces before…but this seemed more like a piece to have fun with then to restore.

I appreciate that it is not a project that would appeal to purists or…men who notice furniture.

Love that dresser!

Although I may be biased, since I painted a library wall in my home that color!
