before & after: alyssa’s wall plaque and brittney’s clock

alyssabefore
today’s first before & afters come from d*s readers alyssa and brittney. first up is alyssa, who has “always has an eye out for crazy owl-related objects“. she found this lot of “owl parts” and decided that she had to have them. not sure what to actually do with them, alyssa decided that she needed a torso to go with the rest of the parts.

alyssadetails
enter: her grandmother’s printing of aubrey beardsley’s 1895 “illustration of isolde”- aka, the bird’s torso! using the bird’s head, wings and claws to act as an accent on the frame, she created a beautiful outer bird “frame” using the bird parts she painted black. great work, alyssa!

brittney from walls the colour store had a clock laying around that was in need up an update. so she decided to remove the clock mechanism, apply wallpaper to the face and spray paint the hand silver so they would pop against the black paper. and voila- a new clock! great work, brittney!

Wow, that deconstructed owl is crazy! I applaud the imaginative thinking behind that DIY. The clock is also cool.

hmm, kind of bonkers. i’m not sure it works exactly. but yes! hooray for imagination!

I think the the owl parts on their own are really interesting, but the effect together kind of creeps me out.

I love that owl idea! I’ve never seen just random plastic owl parts before but this idea is just great.

WOW! that is an interesting take, really unique!

What kind of wallpaper is that?

Personally I think if those owl parts had framed that clock, they would look less……funky, and more kitschy-cute.
But cool idea, nonetheless.

Squeeeee! I have the same print grouped with a few other Beardsleys. I’m always excited to see him. The owl compliments the print so well!

while the new clock is pretty, it’s a shame that she had to use such a lovely old (or retro) clock for the project…the typeface for the numbers was gorgeous!

Ugg… not a fan. The owl thing is just weird and I actually really prefer the old clock! It had so much personality. boo.

Not liking the the owl/frame combo at all….it looks very cheap.

i actually prefer the before clock, it has such character! also, i’d love to see each clock on the wall so that i can think about them as a whole “experience”.

i love the clock.

however, as much as i love owls, this is kind of creepy

not digging this one, something is just off with the owl and I like strange things. I also agree that the clock had more character before.

I think I’m in the minority, but I like both afters, especially the owl parts. They’re delightfully gothic and match the Beardsley print well.

As for the clock, I think the after version looks more polished. The before version reminds me of the fake vintage stuff you might find at Kirkland’s or Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

The wallpaper on the clock is a David Oliver design called “Opium” in black, available through our shop. And, the clock really did need this update. It is actually made to look very “old world” with a printed face and crackle finish – it’s not as glamorous as it may come across in the photo, not to mention, a look that is beyond dated.

i love the idea of the owl, but think it would’ve worked better with a smaller piece of art.

July 16th, 2009 - 8:14 pm

oh no! that beautiful clock…. that makes me very sad.

LOL at the comments that state that the clock was “beautiful”, and had “such character” before. Now it looks fresh and modern.

I like the take on the Owl, but that is a look that’s going to push buttons. I wish I had that print!

What a great Beardsley print. And the owl frame is very cool.

July 17th, 2009 - 12:12 am

What if they took the owl parts in black and placed them around the (original) clock?

It might work!

Well, I still like “my” clock in the before picture the best. Yes, I have that clock in a large scale – 36″ – in my dining room. I love it just the way it is, but I think the new one with the cool wallpaper was very well done.

Love the Beardsley/owl juxstaposition but in my mind, the beautiful clock face got ruined. Far better to have gifted the clock face to someone who would appreciate its beauty and work with an inexpensive new face.
To each his own, I guess.

So sad about the “update” on that beautiful old clock.

i like the owls new colour, it looks beautiful. I wouldn’t go for the ‘body’ idea though, i’d keep it desconstructed, maybe make a composition with just the owl elements and some other found things (gears, feathers, stuff out of the wood)

Sorry….not a fan of the print arranged with the owl parts. It looks a bit scarry. I do like the clock….since it didn’t have a glass over it. I think it looks great now.

The “before” clock looked like something on clearance at a cheap mall store… so, I’m liking the update. The only thing interesting about it before were the hands/center which are now highlighted by the silver. Nice job! I’m on owl knick-knack overload. Spray paint can only go so far, this deconstructed owl piece is trying way too hard to be interesting and it just doesn’t work.

@soda – per Brittney, it was not an *old* clock.

I love both afters. The clock takes a been-there-done-that older trend (which is still attractive to many folks, and there’s nothing wrong with that!), and gives it a lovely modern shine. I like that you used wallpaper – it’s a design you wouldn’t expect to see on a round clock, but it works perfectly.

I also am a huge fan of the owl assemblage. What an imagination you have, Alyssa!

Love the clock update. I see those cheap-o clocks so many places since every lousy mall-store and walmart was selling them a few years back. I never thought of what an easy fix this would be. Nice work.

Also – that clock isn’t actually old, it’s linens ‘n’ things circa ‘05. And it wasn’t particularly chic then. If you don’t like someone’s project, simply don’t comment on it. Unless they are painting pristine condition Eames chairs or something. SIN!
Remember, tastes differ.

I have to agree to Erin: the new clock looks very nice – I just would not have sacrificed the butiful old one for it. (at least if was a real old one)
BTW: great blog! it steels at least 30min of my time …actually I would mind if it was just the time, but its time I am supposed to be at bed already ;o)

alright- The owl around the precious keepsake is so wonderful and whimsical it makes my toes curl!!!!
I like the clock to and admire your bravery to just take it apart and go for it!!
Why cant I find a crew of creative folk like you to ascend upon the Retro Ranch and perform your remake magic
Bravo Ladies!!

I’m sorry for bringing the mood down, I don’t have anything against either of the transormations, i just thought that if it was an old clock it would be sad to change it so much. I haven’t seen any new clocks like that here in Australia, and I guess I got fooled. In the picture, it looks kind of old!

Love the art nouveau-goth feel of your installation. It has an anti-Victorian qualit. Well done!
