before & after: bonnie’s stereo cabinet + megan’s nursery

bonniebefore
i’ve always wanted to find a good stereo cabinet we could use for ac’s old albums and record player, but haven’t found one that was in good-enough shape to take home yet. but this project from bonnie van voorst is great inspiration to try upgrading something that’s in less than perfect condition. bonnie’s husband bought her this old stereo cabinet from a neighbor’s garage sale for $15. it was badly scratched and stained (the previous owner had been using it as a sawhorse!) but after 4 days of sanding, painting and upholstery bonnie updated this yardsale find to create a colorful piece of furniture that is the first thing guests see when they enter her home. great work, bonnie!

next up is megan carty from megan creates! after last week’s much commented-on nursery from knack, i thought it would be fun to contrast that space with this one from megan. megan did all the planning and designing for the space, and her handy husband chris did the muscle-work (since megan was pregnant at the time). megan’s main goal was for the space to feel modern and cheerful in terms of decor. and as side diy project, megan updated a white ikea dresser with seagrass wallpaper on the drawer fronts to give it added texture and to make it look a little more upscale. great work, megan and chris- and congrats on your new little one!

They did a really great job on that stereo. The fabric they chose isn’t my favorite, but they get 5 stars for perfect painting, mix of colors.

This is lovely! It’s modern, stylish and looks like a nursery without going over-cute. I also have to know where the elephant hamper came from!

Both of the lampshades are from Anthropologie…realized I’m a little obsessed when I recognized them right away. Wonderful, cheerful nursery with my two favorite colors–and great for a boy or girl!

Thanks everyone!! The nursery color is from Benjamin Moore and the shade is #618, Robin’s Nest. The elephant hamper is from Home Decorators at http://www.homedecorators.com (you can search for elephant hamper). We have the medium sized one in the honey color. The lamp bases are from Walmart and I switched out the plain white shades for the ones from Anthropologie. I got the doggie dachshund lamp at Modernnursery.com

The nursery is very sweet, and I love the vintage colors. The stereo cabinet… nice idea, but I never understand why people want to paint wood furniture white… it just baffles me every time. Every single time.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind comments! Yes, the record player still works- we have a collection of jazz records waiting for it. We didn’t have much of a choice but to paint it (instead of staining) since we needed to fill the cuts from the saw; I picked white because I love the clean look- AND that was what my husband wanted! :)

Love, love, love it! Now I’m wondering if my parents’ old stereo cabinet is still in the garage :)

Grrrreat looking stereo cabinet. I am surprise that the door pulls were not replaced.

July 3rd, 2009 - 12:42 pm

oh well, i guess if you have to paint it, white’s a good choice :)… I like the blue on the underside of the record player hatch.

Gorgeous, gorgeous. Congrats. Are the lamp shades still being sold at Anthro, do you know? I looked online but they didn’t jump out at me on the site. Thanks!

Hi, Wonderful nursery! I’d love to know where you got the storage unit from. It’s what I’ve been looking for, but in a more affordable version! (Baby arrives in 3 weeks!)

Hi Grecia!
Thanks! The storage unit is from Ikea…at is from the Expedit line and it was $150.
Stacy, yes, they are online. One is the “Bloom Shade” and the other is the “Flower Valley” shade. Under lighting in the “shade” section. Good luck!

I am totally geeking out over that nursery, cause it’s feminine enough but not girl-centric, and there’s no pink ot be found! I detest baby pink as a go-to color for girls, so that is just superbly done.

I love the record cabinet, too! So funky and wonderfully recycled.

Megan said:

Hello! Thanks so much! The curtains are from Wal-Mart online, but I don’t see them there anymore. But, they have a lot of other inexpensive options (if you aren’t a sewer, as I am not) if you search there under “valance”.

Megan, I love the nursery! And I’ve been trying to find that exact crib bedding {I first saw it in Domino in Jenna Lyon’s nursery} – love it. If you don’t mind sharing, where did you find it? And I just might use that Benjamin Moore color in my dining room. Thank you!!
