[this post is the fifth in a series of guest posts we'll be sharing from our summer correspondent in copenhagen, brittany watson]
Hej all! I’m back for one of my favorite stories thus far. Even before I arrived in Denmark I was on the edge of my seat for a visit to the studio of Lisbet Friis. I have been enchanted with her textiles for quite some time and now I guess you could say that I’ve been completely won over. In addition to brilliant colors and a perfected work process the woman’s got humor and kindness down pat. Her exhibition for the Art Centre Silkeborg Bad brings me to actually Laugh Out Loud. She was inspired by home magazines where women create the seemingly “perfect” home so her series consists of patterns with sayings like “I’m blessed with good taste and humility,” and “I am so in demand,” and my personal favorite, “I have good connections.” Lisbet captivated us with wild stories ranging from her meeting with the Queen of Denmark to design the royal yacht to her present work designing textiles based off army medals and ribbons.

Her studio is situated just outside Copenhagen next to the king’s hunting castle in an old factory that’s been turned into a community of artists and craftsmen. The spot is “so in demand” itself as she signed up twenty years ago and just got the space last year. But, in my humble opinion, well worth the wait. I mean, it’s just across the street is a little lake with ducklings and swans for crying out loud. Yes, I know, enchanting. The studio showcases a lot of her own work like the mattresses she has designed that sit right inside her office for power naps as well as some handbags that I definitely wouldn’t mind in my wardrobe.
See you next week with more Scandinavian adventures. -b.
