diy wednesdays: lauren and derek’s cookbook covers

cookbook1
we’ve always loved these classic gingham tablecloths, and on a recent visit to the dollar store we were excited to find them in a fun assortment of colors (in addition to the standard red). because they are water resistant and so easy to work with, we thought they would make nice protective covers for a few of our favorite cookbooks, which over the years have endured more than their fair share of sauce splatters and flour dustings.

have fun!

here’s what you’ll need:
picnic tablecloth
scissors
tape

cookbook2

1. the technique is the same as it was in school. lay your book open on top of a length of tablecloth. cut a length of tablecloth with a 2” border around the entire book.

cookbook4

2. fold the top and bottom pieces under so they are flush with the cover, then fold the side pieces over the outside edges and secure them with a little piece of tape.

Cute idea for those books whose shape you’ve got memorized!

One tip, though, from a longtime textbook wrapper – It’s even better if you slide the book covers into the grooves created when you fold the plastic edges in. it keeps the cover more securely wrapped around the book, and you can tape the plastic to itself, instead of to the interior cover of the book.

i am 68 years young. did this with left-over oilcloths on all of our books. Were so proud when taking to school. we truly used everything during my young years. recycling was a way of life.

I will have to try this, since I am a fan cookbooks, gingham, and 5&10s! Thanks.
