good morning! after a successful trip to radio city this weekend for the UFC 100 viewing party (all my picks won!) i am back at the laptop and ready to work. most importantly- i’m thrilled to introduce two new guest bloggers for this week- one on the d*s guest blog, and one that will join us here in the mornings.
first up is the lovely rei jin of bailey doesn’t bark- rei jin is our official guest blogger for the week and she’s chosen a great theme for her posts- design inspired by fairytale heroines! click here to check out her first post inspired by the little mermaid. welcome, rei jin!

next up is a special guest treat- mornings with one of my favorite illustrators, alex eben meyer. alex is a fantastic brooklyn-based illustrator whose work has appeared in the new york times, time out new york, 7×7 magazine, and slate.com among others. but most importantly (to me, at least)- alex designed my favorite sweatshirt of all time, our BTSH street hockey league hoodies.
i met alex while playing for ‘the unicorns’ at BTSH and have been following his work ever since. we got to see a special sneak peek into his lovely greenpoint apartment in february and today i’m thrilled to welcome him to d*s for a special week-long guest blog on the main page. alex will be joining us early each morning with special morning-themed (ie: muffins, coffee) illustrations inspired by local brooklyn coffee shops. i thought it would be fun to start the day with something different this week, so i hope you’ll enjoy alex’s illustrations!

coffeeshop // blue stove: a bakery/coffeeshop with communal seating and drool inducing bakegoods. the first time i went, they had recently opened and their oven was slightly out of true (what’s the baking term for your oven being not level?), thus the muffin crowns were a range of tasty mutations. the second visit yielded a muffin with a delicious growth. what will the future hold!? ( d*s guest blog score: 5 out of 5 sketchbooks)

coffeeshop // fabianes: normally, i am optimistic about the places i go, but sometimes the anger rises. i recently had a bagel at fabianes and it was one of the saddest specimens of bagel that i have come across. it still got drawn, but not happily. (d*s guest blog score: 1 out of 5 sketchbooks)

coffeeshop // el beit: now enters the fancies of the coffee shop world. el beit features the clover machines and expensive prices. it was warm, so i got an iced coffee, and expecting nothing special, headed out back to draw a mop. i complain about plenty of stuff, but this was some fine iced coffee (and quite a mop-bucket). if you are looking for a who’s who of billyburg elite, this is the place to be. (d*s guest blog score: 3 out of 5 sketchbooks)

coffeeshop // oslo: muffins, coffee, good music, quality people watching, and upside down bikes. it’s not the coziest of the coffeeshops, but between the good vibe and roasting their own coffee, it just makes me happy and yields good drawings. (d*s guest blog score: 5 out of 5 sketchbooks)
