vanity roundup

vanity1
lately i’ve been getting a lot of emails requesting a vanity roundup, so i thought i’d do a little web-surfing and compile a selection of the best (high, low, and in-between) in the market right now. vanity tables often refer to the bathroom variety (with a sink), but today i’ll be focusing on vanity tables, desks and cabinets that are meant to act as a dressing table/area with mirrors. i’ve always wanted to sneak a little vanity table in my home one day and surprisingly, pbteen ended up having a ton that i loved. but there are over 35 options here to check out (including a few cute vanity chairs), so i hope you’ll find something you like in the roundup! don’t forget, ebay and craigslist often offer affordable options as well. (click here and scroll down the page for the full archive of product roundups)

[image above, clockwise from top left: vintage french vanity $2900, shabby chic vanity table $99.99, monmartre $2450, mini parsons desk $199 (perfect for use as a small vanity), vinstra $399 (for taller users or primping-while-standing), edland dressing table $199, cabana vanity $1295, chelsea vanity $1299]

I have a vanity and I love it! I got it from Target, from the kids furniture section (similar to the shabby chic one above). Yes, anyone who comes over to our place makes fun of it, because it’s totally made for 12 year olds fooling around with mommy’s make-up, but it really is so practical! It came with an attached mirror, but the height wasn’t quite corrrect since it’s made for kids. So I removed that and just use a Conair make-up mirror.

This is so perfectly timed. My bf and I are re-doing our bedroom next weekend and I’m setting up a little vanity area in it. I have the CB2 clear console table above, which I LOVE and had used in my last apt, but it now doesn’t have a home so I was planning on re-purposing it as my vanity table. The only problem is there is no storage! Trolling ikea yesterday, I noticed this drawer unit, http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40107872 (in white), which I think will fit well under the console (it would only peek out an inch or so). Or I may just use the top drawer of my dresser. So many decisions! :) Great roundup.

These are great. When we move into a bigger place i’d love to have one of these.

When I was eight or nine I had my grandmother’s old vanity in my room. It was the perfect place to play dress-up! As I now live in a place with a tiny, shared bathroom, I wish I had a vanity in my bedroom so I could do my hair, makeup, and jewelry there.

I finally got a vanity (my very first one) a couple of years ago. I was looking at the darby one you show, but went with one a bit similar from Bombay before they closed down here.

So many beautiful things. I love the mix of vintage with modern choices.

A vanity may not seem like a necessity but I purchased one several years ago and I find it a very relaxing way to get ready in the morning. Not to mention the benefit of organization.

That “vinstra” collection from Ikea worked out well for us in the Venice, CA studio for make-up artist Kerry Malouf.

OH, this is WONDERFUL! I have been searching for a vanity.

July 7th, 2009 - 4:18 pm

I wish I had more room in our bedroom for a vanity. There is something so antiquated about sitting down and brushing your hair at one. Dang. Now I want one, badly.

July 7th, 2009 - 4:24 pm

Wow! You found such diversity. Surely anyone could find something that would work perfectly. Tough to choose just one.

I love vanities, or dressing tables, as we call them in England. The pink one is lovely!!!

Alas, my apartment is too small! I use the top of my dresser. I simply added a mirror!

Love the vanities that you have chosen. Do you have any advice on where to find that mirror with all the light bulbs all around the edges?

hi nini! i haven’t found any online yet but this link has a great idea:

http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=286111.0

basically, by a standard mirror with a thick frame and drill holes to insert globe-style bulbs (will end up being much cheaper than a store-bought one)

Great round-up !

Nini> I had such a miror in my previous, rented bathroom. It was the worst thing ever, getting all that bright and agressive light first thing in the morning.

It still can be a great idea, but stick to very-low watt bulbs, you don’t want to be blinded. Maybe leds ?

What a great compilation of vanities! I would love to have a separate organized place to put all my make up products…someday…

I love vanities! I had a wicker one that I rescued from my aunt’s garage and spraypainted but after years of use it fell apart. I finally just found a beautiful antique one for a steal at only $125. I am recovering a piano bench as the stool for it. It’s so hard to get ready standing up now. I even put a little light from Ikea above the mirror and it’s perfect I highly recommend!

I use a Malm chest to organize make-up, jewelry, and undergarments. It is a perfect height to use the mirror while applying make-up.

I like the pink vanity. I had a vanity desk for my daughter a couple years ago that she never used. It was more to pile clothes on, so we got rid of it. Your post makes me wish I hadn’t.

I didn’t realize that I needed a vanity until I saw this post- now I’m a happy owner of the shabby chic vanity from target :)

So happy I found your site. I have been looking for a vanity set for a year now, and couldn’t find the one that I wanted. Loved the mini chairs. I want one in white or pink-going to try to find one now. I also loved he vanity tower-gotta make room for that one. It’s a must-have. Thanks so much!!!
