whew! it’s finally friday and i am ready to pack up the car and head to baltimore to see one of my favorite people, sneak peek/pretavoyager editor anne ditmeyer, perform in the fluid movement synchronized swimming show. anne is moving to paris for grad school at the end of august (i want to stow away in her suitcase) so i’m going to soak up as much time with her and my other favorite baltimore d*s staffer, felice cleveland as possible. so i’m heading out early today to get ready, because…

next week is a BIG week at d*s! we’re introducing 5 new columns -and writers- to the site and celebrating the 5-year anniversary of d*s with a very special (and ongoing!) gift for d*s readers. so stay tuned, because on monday we’re going to hit the ground running…starting with the special 5-year anniversary surprise. until then, i’m going to head out a bit early and pack up for our baltimore trip.

in the meantime, i wanted to end the week with these beautiful invites from graphic designer erin jang. originally from seattle, erin now lives in brooklyn and produces gorgeous custom invitations (the letterpress cards above were printed by studio on fire). i’m completely smitten with her work, so i hope you’ll check out more of her custom designs right here. thanks, erin! i’ll see you all on monday- until then, a summary of this week’s highlights are below:

i really enjoyed the orange folded design but i must say that the last invitation appears to me to be an almost exact replica of designs by anna melcon of rifle design (http://www.rifledesign.com/events.html). In fact, her own wedding invite, done over a year ago, is strikingly similar. It’s disappointing to see an artist’s work being so closely imitated.

I’ve seen her “Joo & Jacob” invite before over at Once Wed and I have to agree with the comment above it really is a complete rip off of Anna’s work at RIFLE design http://www.rifledesign.com. I don’t understand why this stuff keeps getting posted by the blog world. makes me a bit miffed. You guys should know better!

Thanks everyone for your kind words about my designs, and to Grace for featuring my work on her wonderful blog. I wanted to address concerns raised in a few comments about similarities between one of my designs and those of Anna Bond. I am familiar with Anna’s work and have tremendous respect for her hand-painted style, so I definitely appreciate the desire to protect her work. I want to assure everyone that I take my work very seriously and would never copy another designer.

While it’s true that we share similar hand-drawn whimsical styles, and the likeness happened to be stronger in this particular design due to the color palette and illustration subject, our styles are still very distinct. The use of an illustrated bride and groom, of course, is hardly unique to Ms. Bond or to myself, and is a common motif used in so many wedding invitations. I have been using this kind of imagery in many other projects throughout the several years I have been designing (http://www.flickr.com/photos/theindigobunting/3381305608/in/set-72157616102283411/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/theindigobunting/3785179220/). My illustration in this invitation is original art and solely inspired by this particular client’s wedding. As for other similar aspects, I must point out that all of my custom work is tailored to the client’s specific requests. This exact color scheme, for example, was a specific request of the bride. I also design to match the actual venue of each wedding, and in this case the foliage was drawn directly from photos my client took of the flowers and plants at the wedding site (www.smogshoppe.com).

I hope this explains some of the concerns raised. Anna’s work is truly lovely and although we do share similarities in our invitations and illustration styles, my work is my own, as you can see from my portfolio of past designs on my site. For all of these reasons and more, I hope I can reassure everyone that I would never copy another designer’s work. Of course, in a field as specific and customer-tailored as wedding invitation design, coincidences like these occur often, so I am more than happy to explain my work and clear up any misunderstandings. I’m delighted to find your blog! So pretty. I love these invitations. I’m getting married so, of course, fixate on all things WEDDING. Or, perhaps, I should do that a bit more instead of being on line?
