before & after: tamsin’s kitchen

tamsinbefore
today’s final before & after comes from art director tamsin allen and her photographer husband, with whom tamsin runs a series of photography courses. when they’re not busy working and teaching, tamsin and her husband have been tackling the remodel of their victorian home in london. their most recently finished project is this gorgeous kitchen remodel. tamsin’s handy husband did a lot of the work himself: he replaced the radiators, the ceiling cornicing, the ceiling rose, plastered a wall, replaced the skirting boards, fit the electronics, and did all of the architraving. wow! the floors are originals, but spruced with a “jacobean oak” stain and floor glaze. the rest of the decor is a mix of ebay finds and their favorite modern design objects. i’m blown away by the chic-ness of the final result- great work, guys!

Wow! What a huge difference, I am not a fan of the cabinets but I sincerely respect the work that was put into this! Great job, the floors looks magnificent and I’m glad to see the awesome stove was kept!

Ok – where or where do you get gorgeous cabinets like that? Are the doors and hardware customized?

lovely redo.
wondering about counter space. the table’s a little low for chopping veggies. is there a section we aren’t seeing?

It’s just a bit stark for my taste. I would have run a bold color strip of tiles behind the stove right up to the ceiling.

August 6th, 2009 - 2:42 pm

i am in LOVE with those cupboards! well done…

August 6th, 2009 - 2:46 pm

Fabulous renovation! I am in love with everything you did! That table is to die for too. Job well done. Thanks for sharing.

Solid execution of this install, sheetrock, moulding and floors!
Neat clean and tidy!
Great looking cabinets.
The vent-hood…I get the look they were going for yet it seems somehow unfinished.
The wall color, furniture, lack of accessories (warmth) make this overall design seem like a person suffering from “seasonal depression.’ The simple / stark look is very popular…a simple glaze on the walls may warm this up a bit?

Holy moly! Those cabinets are fab! Love the dark wood floors too, were they hiding underneath the ugly flooring? If so, what a lucky find!

While I love the look of the cabinets, I don’t like the large space underneath them. All I see when I look at that is a place for my cat to hide, and then surprise-attack my ankles while cooking. And I’d rather not drop a knife or a pot of boiling water on my cat by accident, even if she does deserve it (I kid, I kid).

I am with those who would love to know more about the cabinets. Dig the idea of a wooden backsplash (hope it’s sealed right!). Is that a built in espresso machine? Woah.

love this room, the cabinets, the table. let’s eat. great stuff!

I have to have more info about the cabinets as well. The juxtaposition of the sleek mod cabinets and backsplash with the old rustic floors is genius! The modular kitchen is the way of the future! I’m inspired.

ok, this is the most refreshing kitchen remodel I have seen in a long time. It is underdone instead of overdone… why does it seem that people need aisles and miles of granite and islands in their kitchens right now? What the hell are all these busy parents cooking? This kitchen looks perfect for my cooking an eating habits… and its warm and inviting without being a country kitchen.
well done :)

Such HARD work…but what a payoff. Have to say that the one chair looks lonely, is it waiting for others? :)

Carlos said:

Looks great, but if they cook a lot at home, that wall is going to sustain a lot of damage. I’d put tiles, for easier cleaning.

August 7th, 2009 - 8:29 am

i LOVE that floor! do you think it’s reclaimed wood?

This is just lovely… The perfect combination of modern sleekness and vintage warmth. I’d love to know what the beautiful gray color is…
