copenhagen chronicles: kirsten fribert

fribert2
[this post is the sixth in a series of guest posts we'll be sharing from our summer correspondent in copenhagen, brittany watson]

Copenhagen in August. Ahhh! I’m pretty sure this place is the definition of bliss right now. Can we say Fashion Week and Craft Fair? In between a smorgasbord of catwalks I visited the delightful textile designer Kirsten Fribert at her cozy studio apartment here in Copenhagen. I was pleasantly surprised to enter a yellow-lover’s haven, a very kindred-spirit moment (I just can’t get enough of mustard!). Kirsten established her brand, By Fribert, in 2003 where she designs a full range of home products including bed linens, pillows, shower curtains, tea cozies, the whole shebang. Kirsten views her home as a lab, a place of experiments, and the more I explored the more I discovered the fine details. It took me a solid 20 minutes to realize that her “wallpapered” wall in the living room was not wallpaper at all but lines she had drawn in with pencil, almost Agnes Martin-ish, and the kitchen cupboards were layered in a Piet Mondrian grid of masking and fluorescent yellow tape. Makes me want to decorate my own house with supplies from my tool box!

Her living room holds a collection of items from her artist friends like the owl pillow by Karen Bagge and ceramic vases by Ditte Fischer along with items from her world travels like the Moroccan rug and even her own silk-screen wall pieces and pillows from her collection. She uses bed linens from her collection and personal wardrobe items to add a punch of color to the monochromatic yellow bedroom (sigh). The bedroom rug is really two shag rugs, one white the other yellow, stitched together. With such a little flat, Kirsten used some ingenuity to expand the space like the yellow bedroom cabinet she made herself that hardly puts a dent in the space of the room. Brilliant!

Well, I must get crackin’ on my final project…wish me luck! Until next week! -b.

I love the way her space is so light filled, the way the cheery yellows almost glow and all the amazing fun patterns in her textiles. What a great place!

I’m loving all these homes from copehagen chronicles. The yellow bedroom is great. Would it be possible to source some of the artwork in that first pic?

I’m in Copenhagen now as well…and agree completely – in August, it is the most blissful place on earth!

So envious – Copenhagen in the summer must be the most chilled out place in Europe!
Anyone know where I can find a similar rug in the UK; I see them in magazines all the time but never with a stockist?

I had a set of 5 of the candle stick holders featured in the last photo + deeply regret getting rid of them- WHY would I do such a thing? The splashes of yellow are fantastic.

Hi all,

Thanks for your comments! The blinds are just Ikea that she painted. All the artwork is from friends. The rug in the bedroom is a “hyrdetæppe” which she dyed. The pillows are her own by Fribert. Check out her site for pricing.

Adore this flat! So bright and airy – beautiful use of happy colors. I am dying to know the artist of the large framed piece in the photo with the sofa?!

Does anyone know who did the pink print/painting on the bottom left of the wall… with the tent. I love it quite a lot.
