today is probably my favorite day of wedding pictures- handmade projects! in honor of diy day, i’m excited to share images of all the diy projects we did for our big day. i’m also excited to link to a great slideshow of images and information that martha stewart weddings did this week with all the wedding crafters/artists with which we worked. one of my favorite projects from the wedding were these handkerchief table numbers made by the lovely sian keegan. we had leftover handkerchiefs from the invites and we thought it would be fun to use them for table numbers. sian and i flipped through books of numbers and fonts and chose one that we thought would best fit the vintage meets modern theme. then sian stenciled all the numbers on and we wrapped them around bottles of water the day of the wedding.

our little silhouette fans had a moment in the sun yesterday on the martha stewart show and i can’t help but love these even more now. when martha said “these are so cute” i think my heart stopped beating. because savannah is normally the temperature of an oven with a dash of humidity mixed in, we thought it best to provide some “georgia air-conditioning” for the outdoor ceremony in the form of paper fans. i took profile photos of myself, ac and our 2 cats and julia turned them into adorable green silhouettes with the date of our wedding. after being printed they were passed out from a vintage wire basket from @home.

our napkin rings were so much fun to make. i ordered a roll of vintage wallpaper from belgium and cut it in strips to be wrapped around the napkins. the wallpaper was then secured with twine strings through which we strung real wood buttons and toggles (all from m&j trimming). my favorite part of the evening was looking over to the table full of designers and design-folks and seeing them turn the buttons into rings (like rena above) and jacket accessories (that’s derek’s jacket above, with his wedding invite folded as a pocket square- so clever).

one of the things i thought would be a huge disaster were these silly little craft paper “welcome to georgia” drink flags i made. on a whim i decided to make them pretty early in the wedding process using old strips of kraft paper i had laying around and a super cheap stamp from rite aid of all places. i arranged the letters to say “welcome to georgia” and started stamping. then i folded them around our (recyclable!) paper straws and secured them with a glue stick, cutting out a little “v” at the tip for extra jaunty-ness. i thought they’d look terrible so i tucked them away in a box in my closet and sent them down to savannah with the rest of the decorations as sort of a joke. they turned out to be a big hit and well worth the cutting and gluing time. top image by wells p wilson.

erin heath’s gorgeous paper flowers were one of my favorite things at our wedding. erin handmade them from different colors of green paper and then folded paper to make the petals, adding beautiful vintage buttons and trimming for the centers. i still have most of these sitting in my house- i can’t bare to part with them they’re so gorgeous. i thought they’d be a nice, crafty alternative to traditional floral swag. the martha team helped us turn the vintage wallpaper i bought into paper for guests to leave notes. we didn’t do a formal guest book so instead people wrote notes on paper that had the wallpaper pattern printed on one side (it was scanned in and then reprinted on paper) and leave them in jars on the green planter. image above by tara donne for martha stewart weddings

our escort tags were originally sort of a disaster. julia and i came up with a million different ideas for these and finally ended up settling on fabric tags inspired by one that was on a gift sian keegan gave me for my birthday. julia scanned in the wallpaper and then we used digitally printable fabric to print the pattern on one side. then julia isolated a few flowers from the wallpaper pattern and printed them, with guests’ names, on another sheet of fabric. then i cut them out and used (smelly) spray adhesive to affix them to regular manila colored tags from staples. we then used miniature clothespin clips to attach them to the petticoat dryer. last but not least- our ceremony decor. the tree we were married under was gorgeous enough to not need much else in the way of decoration- with all that spanish moss it’s so romantic. but i wanted a little extra something to frame the wedding party and martha stewart weddings editor katie hatch came to my rescue. a month prior to the wedding i bought-out all the vintage doilies on etsy and ebay hoping to make an asymmetrical installation in the tree using starched doilies stitched together. but no matter how much i starched, the weight of the doilies made them sag and droop (not pretty). so i bagged the idea and katie came up with the idea to find vintage tea linens on ebay and simply stitch them together to create a banner/curtain for the tree. in the end this was so much simpler and so much more beautiful. sometimes the simplest solutions can be the most beautiful. i will never ever forget the feeling of walking in front of aaron at the end of the aisle and looking up to feel the breeze on my face and watch the sun shine through those tea linens. i kept looking up to watch them sway in the wind- it was really special and something i’ll never forget.
