i’m excited to be the guest blogger this week and share with you a little bit of what i’ve been obsessed with lately – which you can probably already tell – is housing and homesteading. portland has so many great houses, old and new alike, and creative people and businesses that create and cater to modern urban homesteading. it’s a pity i’ll only be able share a small sampling, but i’ll be choosing my very favorites of all we have available here in town, and online!
my own current house – a large updated craftsman house with a small garden – was the ideal place for my family and business two years ago when we arrived in portland. but life has changed significantly and it’s now too much for just me and my dog. i acidentally stumbled upon the perfect new little house for us in the course of doing research for my guest blogging stint this week! whoops! anyone out there interested in my house? email me and i’ll put you in touch with my real estate agent!

one of my favortie current building projects in town is the harpoon house. yup, katherine and matt are living every designer’s dream: they’re in the midst of building their own house, with every step of the way documented on their blog!

Located on an urban infill lot in the inner Southeast Portland neighborhood of Buckman, the site has existed for decades as an unadorned patch of neatly groomed lawn hosting a single hydrangea bush and a tidy chain link fence. It will soon be the site of Harpoon House – a small, efficient dwelling – and Harpoon Gardens – a diversity of native plants, trees, edibles, and possibly a few chickens.
The stats: 2500 square feet of land. 2 people and 1 cat. 16 by 28 by 28 feet tall. 1152 square feet of house. 1 bedroom. 1 bathroom. 1 root cellar. 1 roof garden. 0 garages.
Harpoon House will be topped with of 433 square feet of ecoroof. Soil and plants instead of tar paper and asphalt shingles. The verdant rooftop will help the house stay cool in the summer months and absorb run-off in the rainy months.
i love the house so far, and can’t wait to see it completed! maybe katherine and matt will share the finished results with us in a design sponge sneak peek house tour?
i’ll leave you today with a quick pic of the dave’s killer bread delivery bike i spied parked outside of red and black cafe last week. lots of items get delivered via bike here in portland. two more i can think of off the top of my head are coffee via courrier coffee roasters, and soup via soupcycle.
